Standard 4: Understands the principles of heredity and related topics

Benchmark 3:  Knows that new heritable characteristics can only result from new combinations of existing genes or from the mutations of genes in an organisms sex cells; other changes in the organism cannot be passed on

Benchmark 4:  Knows that mutations and new gene combinations may have positive, negative, or no effects on the organism

Key concepts:  Traits are inherited from parents.  These traits are passed on though genes.  Genes are located in the chromosomes of each cell and carry only one unit of information.  Some traits are determined by one gen and some are determined by several genes.  One gene can influence more than one trait.
Students should know:
-traits are inherited from parents (highly desirable)
-genes contain heredity information (highly desirable)
-genes are located in the chromosomes of each cell (desirable)
-each gene carries a single unit of information (highly desirable)
-one gene can influence one trait (highly desirable)
-a trait can be determined by one gene or many (highly desirable)
-definition of dominant and recessive traits (highly desirable)
-how to use a punnet square (highly desirable)

What students should be able to do:
-visit websites provided for them to find information to complete activities
-visit websites on DNA fingerprinting and Anastasia.  Explain the DNA fingerprinting process and how it was instrumental in discovering Anna Anderson's true identity.
