As
a medical student,
you are
responsible for learning the terminology
that goes along with
genetics. Not only will you be tested on knowing the genetic
terms, but it is in the best interest, of your future job, that you
know what you are talking
about. Your first task is to click on the link below to find information and answer the questions on each section of the genetics activity sheet including: What is DNA, What is a gene, What is a chromosome, and What is heredity. Start the Tour of Genetics Some traits are genetic while others happen by chance, as you learned through the Genetics Activity Sheet Next we are going to look at physical genetic traits between the people in our group to determine which traits are dominant or recessive for our group. First, print a copy from the website of the An Inventory of My Traits Survey, this also includes the data table and the graph. Once you have filled out the survey, combine your information with that of the other people in your group in the data table. What is the percent per trait? -For example,
Gender is usually 50% female and 50% male for the frequency in the
general population. Thumb extension is 75% straight thumb and 25%
hitch hiker's thumb.
Now input the
results from the data table onto
the graph. Do you think your results would be the same from a
larger sample group? As part of the training to be a doctor, you must let parents know of any genetic defects their child might have as the child develops within the womb. Print a copy of the Cut n' Paste Karyotype Activity to cut the chromosomes out on the left and match them with their partners on the right. Your job is to try and figure out why they don't all match. Look at the banding of the chromosomes, the size, and the shape to help match them. What does an irregularity in the chromosomes mean? Ask a partner their opinion. That is it for today, but remember that information that you learned today will be the base for continuing to learn about DNA! Check out the Student Assessment rubric to make sure you'll get the highest grade for today! |
