Introduction:

This webquest teaches about the effects of drugs on the Central Nervous System.  Students will be able to learn about different parts of the nervous system as well as their functions.  Students will also learn about four specific drugs, which include marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and ecstasy. By searching through the resources that we have provided on the resource page, students will also find the effects that these drugs have on the nervous system.  Lastly, students will be able to use their problem solving techniques to correctly identify the information that will be helpful to them in trying to solve the mystery.

Content Area and Grade Level:

This webquest is designed for middle level students.  The subjects that it focuses on are Science and Mathematics.

Standards:

Science (Life Science)

Standard 5 (From Mcrel.org):  Understands the structure and function of cells and organisms

Benchmark 4:   Knows that multicellular organisms have a variety of specialized cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems that perform specialized functions (e.g., digestion, respiration, reproduction, circulation, excretion, movement, control and coordination, protection from disease)

Benchmark 5:   Knows that organisms have a variety of body plans and internal structures that serve specific functions for survival (e.g., digestive structures in vertebrates, invertebrates, unicellular organisms, and plants)

Mathematics

Standard 1 (From Mcrel.org):  Uses a variety of strategies in the problem solving process

Benchmark 1:  Understands how to break a complex problem into simpler parts or use a similar problem type to solve a problem.

Benchmark 6:  Generalizes from a pattern of observations made in particular cases, makes conjectures, and provides supporting arguments for these conjectures (i.e., uses inductive reasoning)

Benchmark 9:  Uses a variety of reasoning processes (e.g., reasoning from a counter example, using proportionality) to model and to solve problems

Life Skills (Thinking and Reasoning)

Standard 2 (From Mcrel.org):  Understands and applies basic principles of logic and reasoning

Benchmark 3:  Understands that when people have rules that always hold for a given situation and good information about the situation, then logic can help them figure out what is true about the situation

Essential Learnings

We want our students to know these drugs and their effects on the nervous system:

We want our students to know the basic concepts about the nervous system and its functions, specifically:

Given different sets of information, the students will use problem solving skills to:

Our students will be able to:

Resources:

All of our resources were found on the Internet.  A direct link to each site is on the resource page. By clicking on the Internet address or link, you will be taken directly to the necessary information that is needed to complete this webquest.

Evaluation:

Our students will be evaluated on each of the three different assignments.  There are ten points possible for each assignment, which means that the whole webquest is worth 30 points.  For a more detailed explanation, feel free to check out our rubric on the evaluation page!

Conclusion:

When students have completed this webquest, they will have a greater knowledge and understanding about how drugs effect the nervous system.  Also, students will gain the knowledge in regard to the negative effects of drugs. For more details, check out the conclusion page!
