Panther Parent is UNI's e-newsletter for parents and guardians. Panther Parent is sent three times per semester and features university events, deadlines and tips from the UNI Parents Association.
Fall Commencement Details
There will be one ceremony for fall 2012 Commencement. The ceremony will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 15, in the McLeod Center. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. While there isn't a limit to the number of guests who can attend, we encourage students to keep in mind a seating ratio of approximately six guests per student.
UNI Graduates Fare Well in Today's Economy
UNI's Career Services office collects data on recent grads as well as current students. The last three years, 75 percent of UNI students found jobs in Iowa.
According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) annual Job Outlook report, the top skills and qualities sought by employers are: ability to work in a team, verbal communication, decision-making/problem-solving skills, plan, organize and prioritize work.
All 99 Iowa Counties Served by UNI's Economic Development Efforts
UNI's Business and Community Services outreach efforts are evident throughout all 99 Iowa counties. Nearly 10,000 jobs have been created or retained through local development efforts. UNI has also been an advocate for entrepreneurship both on and off campus by helping more than 300 startup businesses.

Watch for Launch of New Website
The university will unveil a new home page (www.uni.edu) and new sites for current students and for faculty and staff. These new pages will allow for greater flexibility and depth of UNI announcements and news. Stay tuned!
Study Abroad Program Earns Top Ranking
The UNI Study Abroad Center's Capstone in Southern Italy has been awarded the top short-term study abroad program in Abroad 101's rankings presented by STA Travel. Severe Weather Announcements
Announcements regarding cancellation of classes and/or reduced university operations are made via UNI Alert, local radio and TV stations, and the UNI home page (www.uni.edu). Big Name Concerts Coming to Campus
This has been a big year for concerts at UNI. The next superstars to appear include country artist Alan Jackson and Grammy winner Willie Nelson. Jackson will perform Saturday, Feb. 9, at the McLeod Center. Tickets are on sale now at www.unitix.uni.edu. Nelson is "On the Road Again" and will appear in concert Sunday, May 12, at the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. Tickets go on sale Dec. 7.

RESOURCES FOR STUDENTS
University Book & Supply will buy back text books through Dec. 15. Students will receive cash. Spring textbook orders will begin processing on Dec. 16.
Time to Reapply for Financial Aid
Students must reapply for financial aid each academic year. Students are encouraged to complete forms as soon as possible after Jan. 1. To reapply, visit www.fafsa.ed.gov. Contact the UNI financial aid office at 800-772-2736 or 319-273-2700 with any questions.
The Hunt for Scholarships
UNI's financial aid office encourages students to make use of the UNIversity Scholarship Application (USA). The USA has all UNI scholarships categorized by college, while also allowing a student to apply for all general university scholarships. Deadlines vary; however, the most common deadline for current students is Feb. 15. Taking the Stress Out of Finals
UNI Wellness and Recreation Services offers students opportunities to de-stress with mini massages, furry pets and more Monday, Dec. 10 through Wednesday, Dec. 12, in Maucker Union.

No doubt you've heard this before: It's never too early for a college student to think about getting hired after graduation. It's even more important in today's economy. This article from Forbes Magazine offers six "must dos" for college students.
UNI Staff Offers Advice to UNI Freshmen
Here are a few of the points UNI staff members recommend to incoming students.
- Ask for help when you need it
- Find friends to study with in a quiet environment
- Explore the local community, including the great trails
- Get to know someone different than you
- Get involved in Intramural Sports, student organizations and other campus activities
UNI PARENTS ASSOCIATION
All parents/guardians of UNI students are automatically members of the UNI Parents Association, which works as an advocacy group. Benefits include e-newsletters each semester and a parents' booth at orientation. Contact Leslie Williams, UNIPA liaison at 319-273-2332 with questions. The parents association also supports the Parents Fund, which supports student scholarships and activities on campus.
Get Involved - Join UNIPA Advisory Board
The UNI Parents Association Advisory Board members get the opportunity to share their opinions and insights with UNI staff and faculty. It's a great opportunity to hear and be heard. The board's spring meeting is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 9. Please mark your calendars to attend.
