Veridian Credit Union Community Engagement Award

 

The Veridian Credit Union Community Engagement Awards were initiated to recognize the outstanding contributions of UNI Veridian Winnersfaculty to our greater community. The intent is to not just recognize these remarkable efforts,but also inspire additional meaningful partnerships among faculty, students,and community organizations.

 

Veridian Credit Union has made money available to award one Community Engagement Award for faculty in each of the five colleges of UNI.  Each award recipient will receive a Community Engagement plaque, and a $1000 check payable to the nonprofit organization of the faculty member’s choice. 

 

Award recipients and the community organizations with which they are engaged will be recognized at an annual UNI Community Engagement Luncheon in the Spring.  To distinguish this award from the Outstanding Service Award, candidates for this award will be engaged with the Community through their research or teaching.  Examples are as follows:

 

Examples of integrating community engagement into the classroom
  1. Educational material—Faculty member works with students to create educational materials for children and pilots material locally.

  2. Community interviews—Students interview and interact with community members to complete a classroom project.

  3. Service learning—Faculty member coordinates student interaction and volunteer work with local nonprofit organization as a service-learning project.Veridian Winners

  4. Technology plan—Faculty member works with a group of students to create a technology plan for a local nonprofit or private organization.

  5. Creating public relations materials—Faculty member coordinates students writing public relations materials for a local nonprofit or private organization.

Examples of integrating community engagement into research
  1. Immigrant needs—Faculty member researches immigration and the food processing industry (a growing industry in their state) and identifies best practices to make the transition into the community more seamless.

  2. Psychology —Faculty member works with child abuse survivors from local community and writes an academic paper on child abuse and forgiveness.

  3. Education – Faculty member uses area early childhood education centers as their laboratory to research the effects of early socialization and academic achievement.

  4. Rural development—Faculty member researches poverty trends in surrounding rural areas or state and publishes findings in a journal, but also shares that information locally and statewide with organizations to apply the knowledge gained.

Nominating Procedure

 

Nominations can be made by the community, faculty, staff, and/or students.  Nominating guidelines include:

  1. Secure consent of the nominee (only tenured and tenure-track faculty are eligible)

  3. Upload to the site a letter of recommendation from the community organization with which the faculty member is engaged
