Homecoming 2013 competitions

All registered student organizations, fraternities, sororities and residence halls can compete throughout Homecoming week for a chance to display their Panther spirit and win cash prizes. Teams must register on the Homecoming website by Sept. 20. A team captain from each registered team must attend the Homecoming team captain meeting at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 25, in the State College Room, MAU.

Supreme Court panel discussion

Last year the U.S. Supreme Court made major decisions on same-sex marriage, voting rights, affirmative action and other issues. This year, the court will consider cases on campaign finance reform and abortion. As the court begins its 2013 term, John Johnson, history, and Allison Martens and Scott Peters, political science, will explain those decisions, consider what's to come and take questions from the audience at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 25, in 002 SAB.

International Opportunities Fair

The 2013 International Opportunities Fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18, in the Ballroom, MAU. Learn about study abroad opportunities, financial aid, scholarship, credit transfer, international travel and more. You can also renew an old passport or order a new one. Fee is $110.

Ethics in Organizations Symposium

UNI will co-sponsor a symposium on Oct. 18, focused on ethical issues in academic, business and nonprofit organizations. UNI President Bill Ruud will be the keynote speaker, followed by faculty and community presenters. Registration is required.

Law school Q&A

The Daniel Webster Law Society will host a law school Q&A at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 11, in 023 SAB. Scott Peters, political science, will discuss how to best prepare for law school, factors that law schools consider in admission, preparing for the LSATs and other areas of concern for pre-law students. Flying Spaghetti Monster dinner and charity raffle

The UNI Freethinkers and Inquirers will host its annual Flying Spaghetti Monster dinner from 7 to 10 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 17, in Ballroom A, MAU. The dinner is free. Watch for raffle ticket sales in Maucker Union. Proceeds will benefit the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.

UNI to host Military and Veterans State Conference

UNI will host the annual Military and Veterans State Conference Monday, Sept. 23. The keynote presentation will be given by Meredith Kleykamp, University of Maryland professor of sociology. Breakout sessions will focus on the unique aspects of military and family culture, how colleges and universities can help military members succeed, and tools to help overcome the challenges of transitioning back into civilian life. Texting in class: does it result in lower grades?

How many faculty have said "Put your cellphones away, please!" Anecdotal evidence suggests that students who text during class may earn lower grades. Dennis Clayson, marketing, will analyze and discuss his research on the effects of texting and multitasking on student learning from noon to 1 p.m., Monday, Sept. 16, in 319 CBB.

UNI to host acclaimed historian Doris Kearns Goodwin

UNI will host acclaimed historian Doris Kearns Goodwin on Wednesday, Oct. 2, as part of the Joy Cole Corning Leadership Lecture Series. A special Q-and-A session for students is scheduled for 4 p.m. in the GBPAC; her formal lecture is at 7:30 p.m. in the GBPAC. Admission is free; tickets are required. Tickets will be available: Thursday, Sept. 5 for UNI students only; Friday, Sept. 6 for students, faculty and staff; and Monday, Sept. 9 for the general public. Adobe Creative Cloud campus software available

Adobe Creative Cloud Campus Licensing provides students (only in UNI computer labs), faculty and staff with Adobe software. Details are posted on the ITS website. This software is available for installation on all UNI computers. The capability for a work-at-home offering (for faculty and staff) is in the works but not yet available. Contact your IT support staff for installation.
