Career Services outreach

UNI Career Services has weekly outreach hours at three locations on campus this fall. Students can stop by with questions about resumes, interviewing, Career Services events and any other career-related questions. Outreach locations, days and times are: Maucker Union, Mondays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and noon to 2 p.m., Fridays; Rod Library, Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to noon; and Schindler Lobby, Wednesdays, 9 to 11 a.m.

The October issues of Student Health 101 (SH101), the WRS E-Newsletter and the WRS Personal Fitness E-Newsletter are posted online. SH101 is a national publication focusing on college student interests. The WRS newsletters focus on WRS activities, events and topics of the month.

IRB training sessions offered

Those planning to do undergraduate research outside of class involving human subjects are required to obtain training either in person or online and must get approval from UNI's Institutional Review Board. A training session for undergraduate student researchers will be offered from 2 to 4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 25, in the CME. You will receive a certificate of completion following the session, fulfilling the first step of the IRB process. Register online. A workshop for graduate students will be offered Oct. 7. If you cannot attend the Sept. 25 session, you may register for the graduate session instead.

Common read nominations sought for 2014-15

The UNI community is beginning the selection process for the common read for the 2014-15 academic year. The book must relate to the theme "Media & Social Media" and will be used in the curriculum for the First-Year Cornerstone class, provide inspiration for a Strayer-Wood Theatre production and bring together the campus and community in discussion around critical issues. Please consider recommending a book for this campus-wide project. Submit nominations online by noon, Tuesday, Oct. 1. RAINN Day (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) is an annual campaign to raise awareness and educate students about sexual violence on college campuses. "The Line," a short film that documents real-life stories of victims of sexual assault, will be shown at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 24, in 115 SRL. A panel discussion will follow.

Homecoming 2013 competitions

All registered student organizations, fraternities, sororities and residence halls can compete throughout Homecoming week for a chance to display their Panther spirit and win cash prizes. Supreme Court panel discussion

Last year the U.S. Supreme Court made major decisions on same-sex marriage, voting rights, affirmative action and other issues. This year, the court will consider cases on campaign finance reform and abortion. UNI to host Military and Veterans State Conference

UNI will host the annual Military and Veterans State Conference Monday, Sept. 23. The keynote presentation will be given by Meredith Kleykamp, University of Maryland professor of sociology. Breakout sessions will focus on the unique aspects of military and family culture, how colleges and universities can help military members succeed, and tools to help overcome the challenges of transitioning back into civilian life. How many faculty have said "Put your cellphones away, please!" Anecdotal evidence suggests that students who text during class may earn lower grades. UNI will host acclaimed historian Doris Kearns Goodwin on Wednesday, Oct. 2, as part of the Joy Cole Corning Leadership Lecture Series. A special Q-and-A session for students is scheduled for 4 p.m. in the GBPAC; her formal lecture is at 7:30 p.m. in the GBPAC. Adobe Creative Cloud campus software available

Adobe Creative Cloud Campus Licensing provides students (only in UNI computer labs), faculty and staff with Adobe software. Details are posted on the ITS website. This software is available for installation on all UNI computers. The capability for a work-at-home offering (for faculty and staff) is in the works but not yet available. Contact your IT support staff for installation.

WRC adds hours for Labor Day Weekend
