UNIversitas now published

UNI's journal of research, scholarship and creative activity, "UNIversitas," is now posted online. Contributions include new research material at Rod Library, women leaders of the Rwandan genocide, MOOCs, queer adolescent literature, a digital poem and shared governance at UNI.

Department of Residence office temporary relocation

The Department of Residence offices in Redeker Center will be relocated to the Towers Center East Lounge May 9 through Aug. 9 while construction is completed at Redeker Center. This involves: ID card services, room assignments, dining and housing administration, business office, technology and marketing. The department phone number and email addresses won't change. Fresh Beginnings administration will move to Rialto at Towers Center. Catering operations will continue out of Maucker Union and Commons. Facilities administration will be based in Shull Hall.

Leadership For Diversity Inclusion workshop

The Leadership For Diversity Inclusion workshop offers a positive, interactive opportunity for students, staff, faculty and administrators. The workshop will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., May 15 or July 16, in the CME. Must be able to attend the full day; lunch provided. Spring 2013 Diplomat Series lecture

As part of the Office of International Programs Diplomat Series, UNI will welcome Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Chile Minister Counselor Roberto Matus. Matus will discuss "Chile: a Road to Development" from 6 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 30, in 109 CBB. The lecture is free and open to the public, and will be followed by Q & A.  More information is posted on the international programs website.

College Hill Music Festival May 4

The first College Hill Music Festival will feature 14 indie and alternative bands/musicians from Iowa and across the country. Details are posted online. www.cedarfallsmusic.com The event starts at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 4. Festival passes are $10 (limited number available). AAF-UNI is involved.

Violent Incident Defense Strategies V.I.D.S.

UNI Police have added additional day and evening V.I.D.S. training sessions starting May 6, in the State College Room, MAU. V.I.D.S. training is designed to help individuals increase their decision-making ability and chances of survival during an active shooter or violent incident. Student Research Conference

Jill Pruetz, an associate professor of anthropology at Iowa State University, will be the keynote speaker for the 20th Annual Student Research Conference. Pruetz has studied the behavior of non-human primates such as chimpanzees, spider monkeys and vervets in several different locations. Pruetz will speak from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, April 27, in 002 SAB. She will also be available for informal discussion with students and faculty at 1:30 p.m., in the Sabin Hall Lobby.

Earth Week events

Several events are planned to commemorate Earth Week at UNI. Events include a free yoga session at 3 or 3:30 p.m., April 22; a campus clean up and a showing of the film "The Clean Bin Project" on April 23; a 10-mile bike ride on April 24 and more. UNI's CME will host the play "Mother Tongue" a celebration of Asian American Heritage Month at 7 p.m., Friday, April 19, in Lang Auditorium. The play is a collection of tales that explores and celebrates the traditions, roles and experiences of women of color, and how they are changing.

The Y Factor Iowa: Men Leading by Example

UNI's Center for Violence Prevention will host the Y Factor Iowa, an inaugural summit featuring Big 12 Conference commissioner Bob Bowlsby, on Friday, April 19. The session featuring Bowlsby is from 9 to 11 a.m., at the McLeod Center. An afternoon seminar on the Mentors in Violence Prevention and Coaching Boys into Men programs is from 1:30 to 3 p.m., in 155 WRC. This event is free and open to the public; preregistration is required.

UNI scores gold with STARS sustainability rating

UNI received a STARS gold rating in recognition of its sustainability achievements from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). This is the second STARS gold rating UNI has received since 2011.

Consent and gender workshop

An interactive workshop, "The role we play: Exploring gender and sexual consent through performance" will be offered at 5 and 7 p.m., April 17, CME. Laughter, learning and change will ensue in this creative, safe space. Athletic Training 5k is April 20

The UNI Student Athletic Training Organization (UNISATO) is sponsoring a 5K run/walk at 8 a.m., Saturday, April 20. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. on the east side of the Wellness & Recreation Center. The race will start and finish on the east side of the WRC. Registration forms can be found on the Athletic Training website. The entry fee is $15.  A portion of the proceeds will go to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The Blender 3D Animation workshop has been moved from April 14 to April 21. The Adobe Illustrator workshop will be offered April 14. The workshops are at 6 p.m. in 136 ITTC and are free for UNI students.

Final exam policy

A comprehensive final examination, if required, must be administered at the time indicated on the final schedule. No final comprehensive examination shall be administered to a class within the last two weeks prior to the officially scheduled final examination period (excluding summer sessions or half-semester courses). In the week prior to the beginning of the final examination period, unit tests, papers, projects and other assignments are permissible if announced in the course outline/assignment sheet/syllabus or prior to midterm. If an exam has been given in violation of this policy, students should consult the Student Academic Grievance Policy.

UNI will host Mary Vermeer Andringa, president and CEO of Vermeer Corp. in Pella, at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 11, in the University Room, MAU. Sue O'Brien, a three-time Silver Anvil Award winner, with more than 20 years in public relations will share her background in the industry at 8:30 p.m., April 8, in 134 ITTC.  As a senior practice leader at the Minneapolis based Exponent PR firm, O'Brien has created programs for premium brands including Friskies PetCare, Nestlé Purina, and the Iams Company. She also will discuss how to grow and advance within the public relations industry.

New passphrase plan starts April 15

Starting April 15, ITS will begin the process of switching UNI accounts from using passwords to passphrases. Instead of having at least three UNI accounts with separate passwords that expire every 90 days, faculty, staff and students will use a single passphrase that expires after a year. This change will be made once current passwords expire on or after April 15. The passphrase is needed to log in to UNI Gmail, WiFi-UNI, e-Learning, e-Business (formerly MEMFIS), etc. The Computer Consulting Center (273-5555) and IT support staff are able to reset your passphrase.

Identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender can bring unique health and wellness challenges and opportunities. University Health Services is hosting an LGBT health and wellness panel from 4 to 5 p.m., Monday, April 8, in 115 SRL. Members from UNI Proud will discuss their experiences and contemporary issues as LGBT individuals or allies as it relates to health and wellness. Professional staff will be available to answer questions and talk about services on campus.
