The Y Factor Iowa: Men Leading by Example

UNI's Center for Violence Prevention will host the Y Factor Iowa, an inaugural summit featuring Big 12 Conference commissioner Bob Bowlsby, on Friday, April 19. The session featuring Bowlsby is from 9 to 11 a.m., at the McLeod Center. An afternoon seminar on the Mentors in Violence Prevention and Coaching Boys into Men programs is from 1:30 to 3 p.m., in 155 WRC. This event is free and open to the public; preregistration is required.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month activities

Several events are planned to commemorate Sexual Assault Awareness Month at UNI. Activities include a self defense seminar, The Y Factor conference, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, the Take Back the Night march and more. A schedule of events is posted online.

Feminist blogger will discuss "Why Have Kids?"

Feminist blogger Jessica Valenti will discuss her new book, "Why Have Kids?" at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 17, in 002 SAB. Her lecture will cover the social implications of modern parenting. Note the new date and time.

UNI scores gold with STARS sustainability rating

UNI received a STARS gold rating in recognition of its sustainability achievements from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). This is the second STARS gold rating UNI has received since 2011.

Consent and gender workshop

An interactive workshop, "The role we play: Exploring gender and sexual consent through performance" will be offered at 5 and 7 p.m., April 17, CME. Laughter, learning and change will ensue in this creative, safe space. Athletic Training 5k is April 20

The UNI Student Athletic Training Organization (UNISATO) is sponsoring a 5K run/walk at 8 a.m., Saturday, April 20. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. on the east side of the Wellness & Recreation Center. The race will start and finish on the east side of the WRC. Registration forms can be found on the Athletic Training website. The entry fee is $15.  A portion of the proceeds will go to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Change in date for Digital Collective workshops

The Blender 3D Animation workshop has been moved from April 14 to April 21. The Adobe Illustrator workshop will be offered April 14. The workshops are at 6 p.m. in 136 ITTC and are free for UNI students.

Final exam policy

A comprehensive final examination, if required, must be administered at the time indicated on the final schedule. No final comprehensive examination shall be administered to a class within the last two weeks prior to the officially scheduled final examination period (excluding summer sessions or half-semester courses). In the week prior to the beginning of the final examination period, unit tests, papers, projects and other assignments are permissible if announced in the course outline/assignment sheet/syllabus or prior to midterm. If an exam has been given in violation of this policy, students should consult the Student Academic Grievance Policy.

Earth Week book swap

Bring used paperback and hardcover books to the Rod Library circulation desk and receive tickets to swap for new books (no magazines or textbooks, please) now through April 21. Eco-entrepreneur Majora Carter will give a presentation as part of UNI's Sustainability Dialogue and Action Conference at 7 p.m., Friday, April 12, in the Great Hall, GBPAC. Carter's presentation is free and open to the public. The sustainability conference is also open to the public, but preregistration is required.

Vermeer CEO to speak at UNI

UNI will host Mary Vermeer Andringa, president and CEO of Vermeer Corp. in Pella, at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 11, in the University Room, MAU. Andringa will give a brief history of Vermeer, global growth and innovation. Andringa is part of UNI's distinguished guest lecture series featuring top corporate leaders. Faculty, staff, students and the community are encouraged to attend.

Getting started—and staying—in a public relations career

Sue O'Brien, a three-time Silver Anvil Award winner, with more than 20 years in public relations will share her background in the industry at 8:30 p.m., April 8, in 134 ITTC.  As a senior practice leader at the Minneapolis based Exponent PR firm, O'Brien has created programs for premium brands including Friskies PetCare, Nestlé Purina, and the Iams Company. She also will discuss how to grow and advance within the public relations industry.

New passphrase plan starts April 15

Starting April 15, ITS will begin the process of switching UNI accounts from using passwords to passphrases. Instead of having at least three UNI accounts with separate passwords that expire every 90 days, faculty, staff and students will use a single passphrase that expires after a year. This change will be made once current passwords expire on or after April 15. The passphrase is needed to log in to UNI Gmail, WiFi-UNI, e-Learning, e-Business (formerly MEMFIS), etc. The Computer Consulting Center (273-5555) and IT support staff are able to reset your passphrase.

Identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender can bring unique health and wellness challenges and opportunities. University Health Services is hosting an LGBT health and wellness panel from 4 to 5 p.m., Monday, April 8, in 115 SRL. Members from UNI Proud will discuss their experiences and contemporary issues as LGBT individuals or allies as it relates to health and wellness. Professional staff will be available to answer questions and talk about services on campus.

The Reaching for Higher Ground committee is requesting suggestions for a Reaching for Higher Ground topic during the 2014-15 academic year. Travel and research funds for students

The Intercollegiate Academics Fund (IAF) provides funds to cover research and creative activity expenses for students. Students who have been invited to perform, compete or present their research or work at a conference or intercollegiate event may also apply for travel funds through IAF. Upcoming application deadlines are April 4 and May 2. Funding applications for summer activities must be received by May 2.  For more information visit the IAF website.

Emergency Procedures flier

The UNI Emergency Procedures flier will be posted in mid-April in all UNI classrooms by the Office of the Registrar. All department heads have also received a sample flier from their respective VP or dean. Please post the flier in the appropriate gathering spaces within your department -- such as conference rooms, break rooms, etc. The flier is posted on the safety and health website, under Emergency Procedures Tip Sheet. Please print as many copies as you need to share with your colleagues. Copies don't need to be in color, black and white is acceptable.

High Ground: 11 Wounded Warriors, Climbing Home from War

The College of Education Diversity Committee in collaboration with the UNI Veterans Association (UNIVA) will show the movie, "High Ground: 11 Wounded Warriors, Climbing Home From War," at 6:30 p.m., April 3, in the CME. Following the screening there will be a panel discussion with the UNI VA and Chad Jukes, one of the stars of the film. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Financial Literacy Month Workshops

During April a series of speakers will discuss personal financial literacy. Each workshop will conclude with a drawing for a $100 scholarship, gift cards and T-shirts. Register here. V.I.D.S. training helps individuals increase their decision-making ability and chances of survival during an active shooter or violent incident. UNI's chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) will host Meet the Pros, an event designed to prepare college students for careers in design, marketing, communications and English at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, March 28, in 002 SAB.
