Call for nominations & save the date

The Diversity Council is accepting nominations for the 2014 Diversity Matters Award. This award is presented annually in recognition of dedication and service to UNI in advancement of its diversity-related goals. Those eligible include faculty, staff, students and community members. Recommendations for the award are made to the president who makes the final selection. Additional information and the nomination form are available online. Deadline for nominations is midnight, Thursday, Dec. 12. Awards will be presented at the Town Hall Meeting on Diversity, from 2 to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 22. A Diversity Fair will precede the event from 1 to 2 p.m. Both events will be at the Old Central Ballroom, MAU.

Walk the labyrinth

Enjoy some quiet time walking the labyrinth from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 12, in the Central Ballroom, MAU. Labyrinths have been used as a tool for reflection, relaxation, meditation or prayer for many years. This walk is done on a walk-in basis and will take approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

Resume workshop

Thinking about jobs and internships? The Student Affairs Pre-Professional Association will host a resume workshop from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 14, in 007 GIL. Bring a copy of your resume and have professionals review it with you. This is an opportunity to ask questions, receive helpful suggestions, learn more about the field of student affairs and improve your resume.

UNI to honor veterans

In honor of Veterans Day on Nov. 11, UNI will celebrate veterans with several events. Some include: Veterans Ball at 5:30 p.m., Nov. 11, in Commons Ballroom; panel presentation "Support our Troops: Beyond the Decal" at 4 p.m., Nov. 13, in State College Room, MAU; and at 6 p.m., a showing of "The Battle for Marjah" documentary with Q&A, CME; student transition panel at 12:30 p.m., Nov. 14, CME.

Polar Bare Run, Walk and Roll

The Polar Bare Run, Walk and Roll will cover a mile-long course beginning at the UNI Alumni House at 9 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 12. There is a $5 registration fee. Participants are asked to bring used articles of clothing. Each article will enter you in a drawing for prizes. Register online.

America Recycles Day Scavenger Hunt

Join the RRTTC for a photo scavenger hunt at 5 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 14, through 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 15. Participants will be emailed a list of clues highlighting UNI sustainability initiatives. Twenty winners will be chosen from complete entries received before 5 p.m. Friday. Register by noon, Nov. 14.

The College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences has a new outreach program, ArtReach, a partnership with 220 East, an art incubator in downtown Waterloo. Matt Hoover, an Iowa native and top contestant on "The Biggest Losers," will discuss his struggles with weight, how the choices we make affect our future, and the importance of a college education. This Reaching for Higher Ground event will take place at 5 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 7, at the CME.

What is your opinion of UNI campus restaurants and convenience stores? Take the annual dining services satisfaction survey. The access number is 124 followed by your university ID number. The survey takes approximately four minutes. You can evaluate one or more venues and return to the survey site throughout this week. Your input counts.

Civil Rights icon Angela Davis to visit UNI

Angela Davis, civil and women's rights icon, will lecture on "Finding Your Way: Organizing for Social Change and Human Rights" at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 7, at the GBPAC. Davis is also the keynote speaker for the Annual Conference on Human Rights on Friday, Nov. 8. For more information, contact Michael Blackwell at 273-2250.

New policy review process

New and revised policies will be posted for public comment at the UNI policies site before moving to the Cabinet and Executive Management Team for approval. The Faculty & Staff International Travel Safety Policy and Student International Travel Safety Policy have been posted on the UNI Policies site for review by faculty, staff and students. They will be available for review until Nov. 15.

Important LAC advising announcement for spring 2013

The Liberal Arts Core Committee has approved an experimental course: HPELS 1059 Dimensions of Well-Being for 2 credit hours. Upon satisfactory completion of this course, including both lecture and lab components, students will satisfy the LAC Category 1D Personal Wellness requirement. Enrollment is limited.
