Faculty, staff and students are invited to a campus welcome reception for incoming President William Ruud, from 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 28, in the GBPAC Lobby. The Greater Cedar Valley Alliance and Chamber will host a community-wide welcome event for the Ruuds this summer.

Town Hall meeting on diversity

UNI's Annual Diversity Town Hall will be from 2 to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the Ballroom, MAU. A Diversity Fair will precede the event from 1 to 2 p.m., also in the Ballroom. James Bonilla, an internationally recognized consultant on diversity in higher education, from Hamline University, will be the keynote speaker. Free anxiety screening

Learn about signs and symptoms of anxiety and take a free screening at the UNI Counseling Center on Wednesday, Feb. 27. Screenings will be offered at 10 and 11 a.m., and at 1 and 2 p.m.  No registration is needed. For more information, contact Gretchen Honsell at 273-2676.

Pre-tenure fellowship awards

The executive vice president and provost has funding available for a limited number of summer fellowship awards, reserved for faculty members on the tenure track, to support scholarly, research and/or creative work to assist with tenure review. Completed applications are due in the provost's office by Friday, March 15.

Darwin Week to educate community on variety of topics

Darwin Week lectures will be presented from 2 to 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 18 through Thursday, Feb. 21, in the CME. Speakers will discuss topics related to skepticism, humanism, science and education. The lecture schedule is posted on the Darwin Week website

Small Group Instructional Diagnosis

Small Group Instructional Diagnosis (SGID) is a method of course evaluation that uses an outside facilitator to conduct a discussion with students and to provide feedback to an instructor, usually midway through a course. SGIDs are used to improve teaching, develop ideas for strengthening a course and enhance communication between students and teachers. If you are interested in having a SGID in one of your courses this semester, contact Susan Hill, by March 1.

Strategies for getting the papers you want to grade

A common complaint from faculty is that students don't know how to carry out research successfully. Karen Tracey, languages and literatures, offers strategies to guide students to completing the kind of research papers that faculty want to read. The session will be from noon to 1 p.m., Monday, Feb. 18, in the Oak Room, MAU. Refreshments will be served.

Have you ever wanted to get an idea about whether your students understand a point you're trying to make? Poll Everywhere uses cell phones, tablets or computers to poll students in class.  Jason Vetter, educational technology, will demonstrate the system for faculty from noon to 1p.m., Friday, Feb. 15, in 136 ITTC.

Imagine the Impact Campaign ends with success

Many thanks to the campus community for sending the Imagine the Impact Campaign over the top by $8 million. The campaign ended Dec. 31, 2012. The total raised was $157,857,609.48. Read impact stories at the foundation website.

Emergency procedures flier

A new UNI Emergency Procedures flier will soon be posted in all UNI classrooms by the Office of the Registrar. Additionally, all department heads have received, or will receive, a sample flier from their respective VP or dean. Please post the flier in the appropriate gathering spaces associated with your department -- such as conference rooms, break rooms, etc. The goal is wide-spread distribution.

New UNI president to be named Feb. 7

The Board of Regents, State of Iowa will select the next UNI president at its Thursday, Feb. 7 meeting in Des Moines. The formal introduction of the 10th UNI president is scheduled to take place shortly after the conclusion of the meeting. The announcement will be streamed live on the Internet. The streaming link is located on the BOR home page.

Job shadowing opportunity for faculty and staff

The UNI Educational Talent Search program is in need of faculty and staff volunteers to provide a job shadowing experience for students from Central (Feb. 28) and Carver Middle Schools (April 9) from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., on the UNI campus. The students will ask questions about job responsibilities and education.
