Blue Zones Project - campus blitz week

All employees are invited to join UNI Employee Wellness and the Cedar Falls Blue Zones Project team the week of March 4 to learn more about the Blue Zones Project and how you can live a longer, healthier and happier life. Visit the Human Resources website for more information on when and where Blue Zones Project representatives will be stationed around campus during the week. The UNI Wellness/Recreation Center will close at 9 p.m. tonight, Feb. 21. Friday morning, WRC opening and activities will be determined prior to 5:30 a.m. and posted on the UNI home page, UNI Wellness/Recreation Center facebook page and on the WRS Info Line, 273-2391. Health Beat will remain open until 6:30 p.m. today.

Child Development Center Open House - SAVE THE DATE

The UNI Child Development Center will host an open house from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 7, located at 1901 Campus Street. Enter through the north door by the track and fieldhouse. Informal tours will be provided of the renovated space and brief remarks will be made by Dwight Watson, dean of the College of Education, at 6:15 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Faculty development--helping students in distress

David Towle, counseling center, and Leslie Williams, student affairs, will discuss how faculty can help distressed students get appropriate mental health services and how to address disruptive behavior in the classroom. The executive vice president and provost has funding available for a limited number of summer fellowship awards, reserved for faculty members on the tenure track, to support scholarly, research and/or creative work to assist with tenure review. Small Group Instructional Diagnosis

Small Group Instructional Diagnosis (SGID) is a method of course evaluation that uses an outside facilitator to conduct a discussion with students and to provide feedback to an instructor, usually midway through a course. SGIDs are used to improve teaching, develop ideas for strengthening a course and enhance communication between students and teachers. Strategies for getting the papers you want to grade

A common complaint from faculty is that students don't know how to carry out research successfully. Karen Tracey, languages and literatures, offers strategies to guide students to completing the kind of research papers that faculty want to read. Imagine the Impact Campaign ends with success

Many thanks to the campus community for sending the Imagine the Impact Campaign over the top by $8 million. The campaign ended Dec. 31, 2012. The total raised was $157,857,609.48. Read impact stories at the foundation website.

Emergency procedures flier

A new UNI Emergency Procedures flier will soon be posted in all UNI classrooms by the Office of the Registrar. Additionally, all department heads have received, or will receive, a sample flier from their respective VP or dean. Please post the flier in the appropriate gathering spaces associated with your department -- such as conference rooms, break rooms, etc. The goal is wide-spread distribution.

Job shadowing opportunity for faculty and staff

The UNI Educational Talent Search program is in need of faculty and staff volunteers to provide a job shadowing experience for students from Central (Feb. 28) and Carver Middle Schools (April 9) from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., on the UNI campus. The students will ask questions about job responsibilities and education. Earth Week Photo Contest

The Earth Week Photo Contest is open to all UNI faculty, staff and students. Individuals can submit up to two photos pertaining to Earth Day (wildlife, landscapes, natural scenes, etc.). Please include a short, one-sentence caption describing how the photo is relevant to Earth Day.
