Insights for Effectiveness: "White Privilege: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow"

Community activist, Jim Day will offer workshops to explore white privilege from its beginnings to its present condition in the U.S. He will attempt to predict its impact on future generations through use of media, dialogue and activities. The workshops will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 27 and from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Thursday, March 28, in the Old Central Ballroom, MAU. Register online by noon, Monday, March 25.

New Patent Law – the race Is on

March 16 marks the implementation of the greatest change in U.S. patent law in the past 100 years. The U.S. is moving from a system based on first-to-invent to a new system based on first-to-file. Under the new law, the first person to apply for a patent may be awarded patent rights even though they weren't the originator of the idea. Faculty development: "Turn It In" as a teaching and grading tool

Two of the most common faculty complaints are that students don't understand plagiarism and how to avoid it, and that grading papers is too time consuming. Faculty are invited to a professional development session from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 26, in the CME. Jason Vetter, educational technology and Susan Hill, philosophy & world religions, will highlight turnitin, a tool to teach students about plagiarism and tips for grading papers efficiently. Refreshments will be served.

Vol. 8 of UNIversitas now published

UNI's journal of research, scholarship and creative activity, UNIversitas, is now published. Contributions include: new research material at Rod Library, women leaders of the Rwandan genocide, MOOCs, queer adolescent literature, a digital poem and shared governance at UNI.

Excellence In Liberal Arts Core Teaching Awards

The UNI Sustainability Council is accepting nominations for the fourth annual UNI C.A.R.E. Awards for dedication to sustainability at UNI. Nominations will be accepted through April 8. Awards will be presented at the UNI Sustainability Conference on April 12. Submit award nominations online.

UNI Visual Identity and Style Guide modified

The UNI Visual Identity and Style Guide has been modified as a result of interviews with faculty, staff and student organizations. There are two modifications to the guide which will offer more flexibility while still maintaining UNI's identity.

Faculty development: Creative Controversy

Susan Hill, philosophy and world religions, will lead a faculty development session from noon to 1 p.m., Monday, March 11, in the CME. Hill will demonstrate David and Roger Johnson's "Creative Controversy," a step-by-step small group process that requires participants to engage multiple perspectives on a controversial issue.  Refreshments will be served.

Hands-on grant workshops

A two-session, hands-on workshop will provide strategies for seeking grants from both public and private funding sources. Participants will also do sample searches in some major grants databases.
