New UNI president to be named Feb. 7

The Board of Regents, State of Iowa will select the next UNI president at its Thursday, Feb. 7 meeting in Des Moines. The official naming of the 10th UNI president is scheduled to take place at approximately 4 p.m. The announcement will be streamed live on the Internet. February issues of Student Health 101 (SH101), WRS E-Newsletter and WRS Personal Fitness E-Newsletter are now posted online. SH101 is a national publication focusing on college student interests. The WRS newsletters focus on WRS activities, events, and topics of the month.

Visiting artist Lisa Orr workshop Feb. 5 & 6

Visiting artist and potter Lisa Orr from Austin, Texas will demonstrate her pottery techniques in the Ceramics Lab, 126 KAB, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 5 and 6. She will lecture about her artwork at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 5, in the Art Auditorium, Room 111. The event is open to public.

Panther Caucus - UNI teaching grads sought worldwide

More than 132 schools and 750 teachers will participate in the annual UNI Overseas Recruiting Fair Feb. 1 through 3 at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center in Waterloo. Earth Week Photo Contest

The Earth Week Photo Contest is open to all UNI faculty, staff and students. Individuals can submit up to two photos pertaining to Earth Day (wildlife, landscapes, natural scenes, etc.). Please include a short, one-sentence caption describing how the photo is relevant to Earth Day. All photos must be submitted by March 1, via email as a JPEG file to rrttc@uni.edu. For more information, visit the RRTTC website and click on Earth Week Photo Contest under "Current Events."

Town Hall Meeting on Diversity - Save the Date

The University's Annual Diversity Town Hall will be from 2 to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the Old Central Ballroom, MAU. Sustainability Conference Poster Request

The April 12 and 13 Sustainability Dialogue & Action Conference is taking applications for display posters from faculty, staff, students and community members. Share your information and research on sustainability topics like energy, agriculture, business, etc. Send a paragraph summary of the poster to UNISustainabilityConf@uni.edu by Feb. 10. Applicants will be notified of acceptance by Feb. 15. Maximum poster size is 36'' wide and 42'' high; presenters are responsible for printing their own posters.

UNIBusiness Diversity Case Competition - final round

UNIBusiness is holding its second-annual Diversity Case Competition with $5,000 in prizes at stake for winning teams (prize money will be distributed through the Office of Student Financial Aid). The UNI community is invited to attend the final round of competition starting at 4 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 31, in CBB 109. Save the date for Loewen lecture

UNI will host James W. Loewen, one of the most acclaimed historians and sociologists of race in the United States, at 7:30 p.m., Monday, March 4, in Lang Hall Auditorium. His lecture will focus on his book "Sundown Towns." Please consider including this lecture in your classes and encourage students to attend. This event is dedicated to the memory of Drake Martin, known for his commitment to diversity inclusion.

Seed grants available for research with commercial potential

Grants up to $10,000 are available to faculty and staff for applied research with commercial applications in any field, including information technology, medical technology, biosciences, education, manufacturing, etc. Applications are due Friday, Feb. 22, for March through June 2013 projects. Submit your campus announcements to Inside UNI under "Submission Guidelines" on the Inside UNI site. There are two forms for Accolades and Announcements. A third form for feature story ideas and media stories will be coming soon. Submissions are reviewed daily and published based on relevancy and timeliness of the announcement and accolade.

The MWOne UNIque Academic Advising Award ($1,000) is given to one tenured, tenure-track or non-tenured faculty member employed at UNI for at least three years.  Nominations are due by Friday, Feb. 8 and can be made by faculty, staff and students.  Additional information is available at the provost's website.

STEM proposals sought

The Governor's STEM Advisory Council is seeking applications to the 2013-14 STEM Scale-Up Program Request for Proposal (RFP). The purpose is to identify high-quality projects that have demonstrated success in increasing student interest and achievement in STEM and can be implemented in any community across the state during the 2013-14 school year. The RFP is available at the governor's STEM site. Submit proposals by Feb. 10.

UNI's  Diversity Town Hall on Feb. 20 will showcase diversity at UNI in a new way. If you would like to share with UNI the work you are doing to make UNI a more welcoming and accepting place, send us your video! Provide your organization's name, what you have done, and how we can learn more about you. Each video should be no more than three minutes long. Send completed videos on a flash drive or CD/DVD by Feb. 4 to Ellie Hail, mail code 0385.  Videos will be showcased at town hall event. Emergency Evacuation Chairs

Twenty-three academic buildings on campus now have emergency evacuation chairs. These chairs are used to move people with a disability or injury down stairwells quickly and safely during an emergency. Cedar Falls Fire Rescue and UNI Police have been trained. Harassment prevention sessions

Attorney Jill Jensen-Welch will present several sessions of Harassment Prevention training Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 12 and 13. All faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to attend, especially those in supervisory roles. Several sessions are designated for supervisors only. Panther Caucus - MLK Day

During the legislative session, Panther Caucus will be distributed weekly to legislators, alumni and friends. Thursday's Panther Caucus focuses on the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. UNI students, faculty and staff will participate in the MLK Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 21, in the Cedar Valley. The event is sponsored by UNI's Student Involvement Center. Mandatory reporters of child abuse training

A training session for Mandatory Reporters of Child Abuse will be held on Monday, Jan. 28,  from 3 to 5:30 p.m. in 252 SEC. This training should be completed prior to the student teaching semester.
