Rod Library is changing to meet the needs of UNI faculty, staff and students. The library is conducting LibQUAL+, a nationwide online user-satisfaction survey developed by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) now through May 3. Farewell reception for Jim O'Connor

Jim O'Connor, executive director of university relations, will be leaving UNI May 1 to take a position at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport. Faculty and staff are invited to a farewell reception from 3 to 4 p.m., Friday, April 26, in the Presidential Room, MAU. A short program will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Student Research Conference

Jill Pruetz, an associate professor of anthropology at Iowa State University, will be the keynote speaker for the 20th Annual Student Research Conference. Pruetz has studied the behavior of non-human primates such as chimpanzees, spider monkeys and vervets in several different locations. Pruetz will speak from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, April 27, in 002 SAB. She will also be available for informal discussion with students and faculty at 1:30 p.m., in the Sabin Hall Lobby.

National Volunteer Week: Day of Service

National Volunteer Week is April 21 through 27. To celebrate this week, UNI students, faculty and staff are invited to help with a variety of service projects in the Cedar Valley from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., April 27. Volunteers must register online.

Violent Incident Defense Strategies V.I.D.S.

UNI Police have added day and evening V.I.D.S. training sessions starting April 30, in the State College Room, MAU. V.I.D.S. training is designed to help individuals increase their decision-making ability and chances of survival during an active shooter or violent incident. A panel will consider the future of Spain in the context of Catalan and Basque nationalism, federalist pressures from Madrid and near economic collapse, at 3 p.m., Wednesday, April 24, in 115 SRL. ITS has 104 used Dell OptiPlex 980 computers from the Student Computer Centers available to UNI departments. Requests will be awarded based on highest impact and benefit to UNI students. Submit requests online.

Nominations for the 2013 Regents Staff Excellence Awards

Regents Staff Excellence Awards are presented annually to P&S employees from Iowa's public universities who have made outstanding professional contributions during their careers. Any Regent employee may nominate a deserving P&S employee for this award. Winners will be announced at the P&S Council's Meet the President event in the fall. Guidelines and nomination forms are online.

UNI communication course survey

UNI's Organizational Communication Assessment class is conducting a brief online survey. The purpose of the study is to obtain a better understanding of UNI's communication model and to examine the variety of communication channels used to send and receive information across campus. UNI's CME will host the play "Mother Tongue" a celebration of Asian American Heritage Month at 7 p.m., Friday, April 19, in Lang Auditorium. The play is a collection of tales that explores and celebrates the traditions, roles and experiences of women of color, and how they are changing.

The Y Factor Iowa: Men Leading by Example

UNI's Center for Violence Prevention will host the Y Factor Iowa, an inaugural summit featuring Big 12 Conference commissioner Bob Bowlsby, on Friday, April 19. The session featuring Bowlsby is from 9 to 11 a.m., at the McLeod Center. An afternoon seminar on the Mentors in Violence Prevention and Coaching Boys into Men programs is from 1:30 to 3 p.m., in 155 WRC. This event is free and open to the public; preregistration is required.

UNI scores gold with STARS sustainability rating

UNI received a STARS gold rating in recognition of its sustainability achievements from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). This is the second STARS gold rating UNI has received since 2011.

Athletic Training 5k is April 20

The UNI Student Athletic Training Organization (UNISATO) is sponsoring a 5K run/walk at 8 a.m., Saturday, April 20. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. on the east side of the Wellness & Recreation Center. The race will start and finish on the east side of the WRC. Registration forms can be found on the Athletic Training website. The entry fee is $15.  A portion of the proceeds will go to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

UNI's 2012-13 Fact Book is now available online. This publication contains the latest facts and figures about UNI students, faculty, staff and alumni. It also contains information about finances, colleges, departments and peer institutions. Along with the UNI Fact Book, please note the Institutional Research site which contains a list of quick facts and a variety of UNI reports and data.

Final exam policy

A comprehensive final examination, if required, must be administered at the time indicated on the final schedule. No final comprehensive examination shall be administered to a class within the last two weeks prior to the officially scheduled final examination period (excluding summer sessions or half-semester courses). In the week prior to the beginning of the final examination period, unit tests, papers, projects and other assignments are permissible if announced in the course outline/assignment sheet/syllabus or prior to midterm. If an exam has been given in violation of this policy, students should consult the Student Academic Grievance Policy.

Eco-entrepreneur Majora Carter will give a presentation as part of UNI's Sustainability Dialogue and Action Conference at 7 p.m., Friday, April 12, in the Great Hall, GBPAC. Carter's presentation is free and open to the public. The sustainability conference is also open to the public, but preregistration is required.

UNI will host Mary Vermeer Andringa, president and CEO of Vermeer Corp. in Pella, at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 11, in the University Room, MAU. Andringa will give a brief history of Vermeer, global growth and innovation. Andringa is part of UNI's distinguished guest lecture series featuring top corporate leaders. New video and audio conference technology available

ZOOM.US enables users to have an interactive, high-quality video and audio conference from laptops, desktops and other mobile devices with up to 25 attendees. It includes features like screen sharing and recording capabilities. Attendees aren't required to have a license to use ZOOM.US. More information is posted on the ITS website.

Getting started—and staying—in a public relations career

Sue O'Brien, a three-time Silver Anvil Award winner, with more than 20 years in public relations will share her background in the industry at 8:30 p.m., April 8, in 134 ITTC.  As a senior practice leader at the Minneapolis based Exponent PR firm, O'Brien has created programs for premium brands including Friskies PetCare, Nestlé Purina, and the Iams Company. She also will discuss how to grow and advance within the public relations industry.

New passphrase plan starts April 15

Starting April 15, ITS will begin the process of switching UNI accounts from using passwords to passphrases. Instead of having at least three UNI accounts with separate passwords that expire every 90 days, faculty, staff and students will use a single passphrase that expires after a year. This change will be made once current passwords expire on or after April 15. The passphrase is needed to log in to UNI Gmail, WiFi-UNI, e-Learning, e-Business (formerly MEMFIS), etc. The Computer Consulting Center (273-5555) and IT support staff are able to reset your passphrase.

College of Business Graduation Celebration

UNIBusiness will host its annual Graduation Celebration on April 11. Join Alumni in Residence, executive advisory board members, sponsors, faculty and staff for light hors d'oeuvres and networking at 5 p.m., in the Hall of Flags, CBB. A forum will be held at 6 p.m. featuring distinguished alumni from each of the college's departments. The alumni will give personal accounts of the business world.
