UBS Untenured Teaching Award - March 27

The University Book and Supply Untenured Outstanding Teaching Award Reception has been rescheduled to 3:30 to 5 p.m., Wednesday, March 27, in the Great Reading Room, SRL. The provost's office apologizes for any inconvenience due to this schedule change. Evening Violent Incident Defense Strategies training sessions

UNI Police will offer evening Violent Incident Defense Strategies (V.I.D.S.) sessions starting March 27, in the State College Room, MAU. V.I.D.S. training helps individuals increase their decision-making ability and chances of survival during an active shooter or violent incident. Patrons may check out materials and enter the building until 10 minutes to closing time, at which time service desks close and the doors are locked. Meet the Pros

UNI's chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) will host Meet the Pros, an event designed to prepare college students for careers in design, marketing, communications and English at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, March 28, in 002 SAB. These pros use the power of copy, typography, and motion to grow and develop brands. Designed to prepare college students for careers in advertising, Meet the Pros is a networking event and panel discussion where students can ask questions, find advice and learn what it's like to work in the industry.

Resiliency: prevail and persevere

Life challenges can occur both in our work lives and personal lives. Faculty and staff are invited to a one-hour informational session at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 17, in the CME. This session aims to assist employees in strategizing ways to be resilient, persevere and remain successful during challenging times. The session will also address the stress that we perceive during these times, and the best ways to utilize stress management techniques. Presented by Josh Carlson, an EAP counselor. Register online.

Earth Week Photo Contest reception

All UNI faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the first annual Earth Week Photo Contest reception at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 26, in the State Room, MAU.  Enjoy appetizers and a short photo presentation from graduate student Ben Hoksch detailing his recent kayak travels on the Mississippi River. The top 20 photos will be displayed in a gallery setting and the top three cash prize winners will be announced.

Insights for Effectiveness: "White Privilege: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow"

Community activist, Jim Day will offer workshops to explore white privilege from its beginnings to its present condition in the U.S. He will attempt to predict its impact on future generations through use of media, dialogue and activities. New Patent Law – the race Is on

March 16 marks the implementation of the greatest change in U.S. patent law in the past 100 years. The U.S. is moving from a system based on first-to-invent to a new system based on first-to-file. Under the new law, the first person to apply for a patent may be awarded patent rights even though they weren't the originator of the idea. Faculty development: "Turn It In" as a teaching and grading tool

Two of the most common faculty complaints are that students don't understand plagiarism and how to avoid it, and that grading papers is too time consuming. Faculty are invited to a professional development session from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 26, in the CME. Jason Vetter, educational technology and Susan Hill, philosophy & world religions, will highlight turnitin, a tool to teach students about plagiarism and tips for grading papers efficiently. Faculty development: Creative Controversy

Susan Hill, philosophy and world religions, will lead a faculty development session from noon to 1 p.m., Monday, March 11, in the CME. Hill will demonstrate David and Roger Johnson's "Creative Controversy," a step-by-step small group process that requires participants to engage multiple perspectives on a controversial issue.  Refreshments will be served.

Hands-on grant workshops

A two-session, hands-on workshop will provide strategies for seeking grants from both public and private funding sources. Participants will also do sample searches in some major grants databases. Panther Caucus - keeping tuition affordable

The Board of Regents, State of Iowa, is committed to keeping tuition affordable for Iowa students. If Iowa's public universities receive a 2.6 percent increase in state funding as well as a $4 million special appropriation for UNI, the Regents have vowed to freeze tuition for in-state undergraduate students next fall. Conference on distance education set for March 27

A conference on Perspectives in Quality Online Teaching and Learning will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 27. This distance education conference highlights quality online instruction and student interaction. The keynote speaker is Lawrence Ragan, World Campus, Penn State University.
