Healthiest State Walk

UNI students, faculty and staff will join thousands of Iowans in a commitment to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation by 2016 by participating in the Healthiest State Walk on Wednesday, Oct. 9. Register for the 10 a.m. Maucker Union walk, the 11:30 a.m. Maucker Union walk, the noon McLeod Center walk or the 3 p.m. WRC walk. ISSO presentations for departments

The International Students and Scholars Office would like to explain the services it provides to students, faculty and staff, and advise about responding to the needs of international students and scholars. Supreme Court panel discussion

Last year the U.S. Supreme Court made major decisions on same-sex marriage, voting rights, affirmative action and other issues. This year, the court will consider cases on campaign finance reform and abortion. As the court begins its 2013 term, John Johnson, history, and Allison Martens and Scott Peters, political science, will explain those decisions, consider what's to come and take questions from the audience at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 25, in 002 SAB.

A Fulbright's experiences in Tunisia

The Office of International Programs will host a visiting Fulbright Ambassador Thursday, Sept. 26. She will share her experiences in Tunisia from noon to 1 p.m., in 109 CME. A Q&A session will follow the presentation; refreshments will be served.

International Opportunities Fair

The 2013 International Opportunities Fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18, in the Ballroom, MAU. Learn about study abroad opportunities, financial aid, scholarship, credit transfer, international travel and more. You can also renew an old passport or order a new one. Fee is $110.

Reminder to RSVP for installation

Faculty and staff who have earned a master's degree or higher are invited to march in the installation procession wearing academic apparel appropriate for their highest degree. If you need to rent apparel, you may do so free of charge through University Book & Supply. Email Sue Sonnenberg ( at UBS by Wednesday, Sept. 18. Faculty and staff who are marching, regardless of robe needs, still need to RSVP for the event. Your RSVP information is what will be used in the program.

Ethics in Organizations Symposium

UNI will co-sponsor a symposium on Oct. 18, focused on ethical issues in academic, business and nonprofit organizations. UNI President Bill Ruud will be the keynote speaker, followed by faculty and community presenters. Registration is required.

UNI to host Military and Veterans State conference

UNI will host the annual Military and Veterans State Conference Monday, Sept. 23. The keynote presentation will be given by Meredith Kleykamp, University of Maryland professor of sociology. Breakout sessions will focus on the unique aspects of military and family culture, how colleges and universities can help military members succeed, and tools to help overcome the challenges of transitioning back into civilian life. MAP-Works instructional workshops

MAP-Works is an early intervention system for UNI first-year students, which supports student success and retention. MAP-Works allows faculty and staff to identify students who are struggling during the transition to college, and get them connected to resources early in the semester. Payroll self service direct deposit is available

Employees can set up, or make changes to, their payroll direct-deposit information. Faculty and staff should make changes at least five business days before payday, and students three business days, for it to be effective for that pay date. Free biometric health screening

UNI Employee Wellness will offer a free Biometric Health Screening to all employees from 7 to 8:45 a.m., Friday, Sept. 27, in 007 GIL. Open forum for Alumni Relations director candidates

The two remaining candidates for the position of director of Alumni Relations will participate in open forums in Maucker Union. Texting in class: does it result in lower grades?

How many faculty have said "Put your cellphones away, please!" Anecdotal evidence suggests that students who text during class may earn lower grades. Dennis Clayson, marketing, will analyze and discuss his research on the effects of texting and multitasking on student learning from noon to 1 p.m., Monday, Sept. 16, in 319 CBB.

Scott Ketelsen named director of University Relations

Scott Ketelsen has been named director of University Relations. Ketelsen is currently director for Marketing and Media Production at the University of Iowa. He is a 1982 graduate of UNI and a strong Panther supporter. Ketelsen will oversee university communications and marketing efforts to continue to support overall enrollment goals and the university's strategic plan. He will assume his new duties on Sept. 16.

The International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) can assist UNI faculty and staff traveling abroad on university business with securing visas. There is no charge for this service, but travelers will be responsible for fees charged by consulates, shipping costs and agent fees (if needed). The fifth annual Campus Connexus will be held from 3 to 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18, i the Commons Slife Ballroom.
