Texting in class: does it result in lower grades?

How many faculty have said "Put your cellphones away, please!" Anecdotal evidence suggests that students who text during class may earn lower grades. Dennis Clayson, marketing, will analyze and discuss his research on the effects of texting and multitasking on student learning from noon to 1 p.m., Monday, Sept. 16, in 319 CBB.

Panther Plot Harvest Festival

The Panther Plot, the on-campus student vegetable garden, invites all students, staff, faculty and community members to a sampling of local foods, music and garden tours from 4 to 6 p.m., Sept. 12, at the corner of University Avenue and College Street.

Scott Ketelsen named director of University Relations

Scott Ketelsen has been named director of University Relations. Ketelsen is currently director for Marketing and Media Production at the University of Iowa. He is a 1982 graduate of UNI and a strong Panther supporter. Ketelsen will oversee university communications and marketing efforts to continue to support overall enrollment goals and the university's strategic plan. He will assume his new duties on Sept. 16.

Services for faculty/staff traveling on university business

The International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) can assist UNI faculty and staff traveling abroad on university business with securing visas. There is no charge for this service, but travelers will be responsible for fees charged by consulates, shipping costs and agent fees (if needed). Campus Connexus 2013

The fifth annual Campus Connexus will be held from 3 to 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18, i the Commons Slife Ballroom. This is a fun opportunity for faculty and professional staff to make scholarly connections across campus. Participate in short paired conversations and consult with experts in various areas. Travel and Research Funds for Students

Students who travel to present or compete at a conference can apply for travel funds through the Intercollegiate Academic Fund. The fund also makes awards to support student research and creative activity. Upcoming application deadlines include Sept. 12 and Oct. 3.

UNI to host acclaimed historian Doris Kearns Goodwin

UNI will host acclaimed historian Doris Kearns Goodwin on Wednesday, Oct. 2, as part of the Joy Cole Corning Leadership Lecture Series. A special Q-and-A session for students is scheduled for 4 p.m. in the GBPAC; her formal lecture is at 7:30 p.m. in the GBPAC. Admission is free; tickets are required. Tickets will be available: Thursday, Sept. 5 for UNI students only; Friday, Sept. 6 for students, faculty and staff; and Monday, Sept. 9 for the general public. Interpreters and translators needed

The Office of International Programs, Cedar Valley community members, government agencies and businesses are in need of interpreters and translators fluent in various languages. International Programs is creating a database of faculty, staff and students who are interested in providing this service. To be included in the database, Complete the form online. An application cover sheet and instructions for applying for a Professional Development Assignment (PDA) in fall 2014 and/or spring 2015 are available on the Graduate College website. Adobe Creative Cloud campus software available

Adobe Creative Cloud Campus Licensing provides students (only in UNI computer labs), faculty and staff with Adobe software. Details are posted on the ITS website. This software is available for installation on all UNI computers. The capability for a work-at-home offering (for faculty and staff) is in the works but not yet available. Contact your IT support staff for installation.

Open forum for Alumni Relations director candidates

Five candidates have been chosen for on-campus interviews for the position of director of Alumni Relations. Each will participate in an open forum. Presentations will be from 1:15 to 2:05 p.m., on Sept. 5, 6 and 9 in the Elm Room; from 12:40 to 1:30 p.m., Sept. 12, in the Presidential Room; and 1 to 1:50 p.m., Sept. 16, in the Elm Room, MAU. Holocaust speaker available to speak to classes

UNI vs. ISU football spirit tent and tailgate

Lifelong University offers "Where Does my Food Come From?"

A Lifelong University course will cover gardening, the current food supply system, shopping local options and more. Fall full faculty meeting

The fall full faculty meeting will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Monday, Sept. 16, in Lang Auditorium. Speakers will include Katie Mulholland, president pro-tem of the Iowa Board of Regents, President Ruud and other campus leaders. New faculty and winners of faculty awards will be recognized.
