UNI budget update: education appropriations bill

House File 604, (the Education Appropriations bill) was approved last week. The legislation calls for a 2.6 percent increase in general state aid for the three public universities as well as an additional $4 million for UNI. This means UNI would receive a 7.5 percent increase next year. The complete update is posted online.

Faculty and staff with lobbying contacts

Lobbying activity from Jan. 1 to March 31 must be reported by March 28. UNI files quarterly reports on specific lobbying issues and the expenses incurred in lobbying. The university's policy on Federal and State Lobbying and Political Activity can be found in the Policies and Procedures Manual at 10.09. If there is nothing to report, note that in the "comments" section. Contact Pat Geadelmann in the president's office with questions.

'White Privilege: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow'

Community activist, Jim Day will offer workshops to explore white privilege from its beginnings to its present condition in the U.S. He will attempt to predict its impact on future generations through use of media, dialogue and activities. The workshops will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 27 and from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Thursday, March 28, in the Old Central Ballroom, MAU.

UBS Untenured Teaching Award - March 27

The University Book and Supply Untenured Outstanding Teaching Award Reception has been rescheduled to 3:30 to 5 p.m., Wednesday, March 27, in the Great Reading Room, SRL. The provost's office apologizes for any inconvenience due to this schedule change. The program begins at 4 p.m. The winners are Ruth Chananie-Hill, sociology, anthropology and criminology; Elizabeth Lefler, psychology; Emily Machen, history; and Elizabeth Sutton, art.

Evening Violent Incident Defense Strategies training sessions

UNI Police will offer evening Violent Incident Defense Strategies (V.I.D.S.) sessions starting March 27, in the State College Room, MAU. V.I.D.S. training helps individuals increase their decision-making ability and chances of survival during an active shooter or violent incident. Meet the Pros

UNI's chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) will host Meet the Pros, an event designed to prepare college students for careers in design, marketing, communications and English at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, March 28, in 002 SAB. These pros use the power of copy, typography, and motion to grow and develop brands. Designed to prepare college students for careers in advertising, Meet the Pros is a networking event and panel discussion where students can ask questions, find advice and learn what it's like to work in the industry.

Resiliency: prevail and persevere

Life challenges can occur both in our work lives and personal lives. Faculty and staff are invited to a one-hour informational session at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 17, in the CME. This session aims to assist employees in strategizing ways to be resilient, persevere and remain successful during challenging times. The session will also address the stress that we perceive during these times, and the best ways to utilize stress management techniques. Presented by Josh Carlson, an EAP counselor. Register online.

Earth Week Photo Contest reception

All UNI faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the first annual Earth Week Photo Contest reception at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 26, in the State Room, MAU.  Enjoy appetizers and a short photo presentation from graduate student Ben Hoksch detailing his recent kayak travels on the Mississippi River. The top 20 photos will be displayed in a gallery setting and the top three cash prize winners will be announced.

New Patent Law – the race Is on

March 16 marks the implementation of the greatest change in U.S. patent law in the past 100 years. The U.S. is moving from a system based on first-to-invent to a new system based on first-to-file. Under the new law, the first person to apply for a patent may be awarded patent rights even though they weren't the originator of the idea. Faculty development: "Turn It In" as a teaching and grading tool

Two of the most common faculty complaints are that students don't understand plagiarism and how to avoid it, and that grading papers is too time consuming. Faculty are invited to a professional development session from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 26, in the CME. Jason Vetter, educational technology and Susan Hill, philosophy & world religions, will highlight turnitin, a tool to teach students about plagiarism and tips for grading papers efficiently. Refreshments will be served.
