New video and audio conference technology available

ZOOM.US enables users to have an interactive, high-quality video and audio conference from laptops, desktops and other mobile devices with up to 25 attendees. It includes features like screen sharing and recording capabilities. Attendees aren't required to have a license to use ZOOM.US. More information is posted on the ITS website.

Annual graduate faculty meeting

The annual graduate faculty meeting will be held at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, April 18, in 115 SRL. Awards will be presented to graduate students and faculty. The meeting format includes a facilitated discussion with attendees. A reception in the Great Reading Room will follow the meeting.

Getting started—and staying—in a public relations career

Sue O'Brien, a three-time Silver Anvil Award winner, with more than 20 years in public relations will share her background in the industry at 8:30 p.m., April 8, in 134 ITTC.  As a senior practice leader at the Minneapolis based Exponent PR firm, O'Brien has created programs for premium brands including Friskies PetCare, Nestlé Purina, and the Iams Company. She also will discuss how to grow and advance within the public relations industry.

New passphrase plan starts April 15

Starting April 15, ITS will begin the process of switching UNI accounts from using passwords to passphrases. Instead of having at least three UNI accounts with separate passwords that expire every 90 days, faculty, staff and students will use a single passphrase that expires after a year. This change will be made once current passwords expire on or after April 15. The passphrase is needed to log in to UNI Gmail, WiFi-UNI, e-Learning, e-Business (formerly MEMFIS), etc. The Computer Consulting Center (273-5555) and IT support staff are able to reset your passphrase.

College of Business Graduation Celebration

UNIBusiness will host its annual Graduation Celebration on April 11. Join Alumni in Residence, executive advisory board members, sponsors, faculty and staff for light hors d'oeuvres and networking at 5 p.m., in the Hall of Flags, CBB. A forum will be held at 6 p.m. featuring distinguished alumni from each of the college's departments. The alumni will give personal accounts of the business world.

Free biometric health screening

UNI Employee Wellness encourages all employees to participate in a free biometric screening from 7 to 8:45 a.m., Friday, April 26, in GIL 007/009. Faculty development: creating and grading presentations

Nikki Zumbach Harken, communication studies, will lead a faculty development session focusing on how to create and grade oral presentation assignments from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Thursday, April 4, in the CME. She will provide an overview of the LAC Oral Communication class, strategies for preparing and grading students -- including grading rubrics.

The Reaching for Higher Ground committee is requesting suggestions for a Reaching for Higher Ground topic during the 2014-15 academic year. April Lunch and Learn

If "finding balance" is a concept that has eluded you in your day-to-day life, attend a lunch and learn from noon to 1 p.m., on Wednesday, April 10, in the CME to learn more about author Edward Hallowell's "Principles for Managing Modern Life."  Participants will learn about time management and strategies for living a less chaotic life. Travel and research funds for students

The Intercollegiate Academics Fund (IAF) provides funds to cover research and creative activity expenses for students. Students who have been invited to perform, compete or present their research or work at a conference or intercollegiate event may also apply for travel funds through IAF. Upcoming application deadlines are April 4 and May 2. Funding applications for summer activities must be received by May 2.  For more information visit the IAF website.

Emergency Procedures flier

The UNI Emergency Procedures flier will be posted in mid-April in all UNI classrooms by the Office of the Registrar. All department heads have also received a sample flier from their respective VP or dean. Please post the flier in the appropriate gathering spaces within your department -- such as conference rooms, break rooms, etc. The flier is posted on the safety and health website, under Emergency Procedures Tip Sheet. Please print as many copies as you need to share with your colleagues. Copies don't need to be in color, black and white is acceptable.

High Ground: 11 Wounded Warriors, Climbing Home from War

The College of Education Diversity Committee in collaboration with the UNI Veterans Association (UNIVA) will show the movie, "High Ground: 11 Wounded Warriors, Climbing Home From War," at 6:30 p.m., April 3, in the CME. Following the screening there will be a panel discussion with the UNI VA and Chad Jukes, one of the stars of the film. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

The Office of Student Financial Aid has posted the spring 2013 edition Facts for Faculty newsletter online. The newsletter provides financial aid information to assist faculty and staff in their work and communication with students. Read about the decrease in student debt, summer aid, summer consortiums, a new financial-awareness counseling tool, financial literacy activities and more.

UNI budget update: education appropriations bill

House File 604, (the Education Appropriations bill) was approved last week. The legislation calls for a 2.6 percent increase in general state aid for the three public universities as well as an additional $4 million for UNI. This means UNI would receive a 7.5 percent increase next year. The complete update is posted online.

Faculty and staff with lobbying contacts

Lobbying activity from Jan. 1 to March 31 must be reported by March 28. UNI files quarterly reports on specific lobbying issues and the expenses incurred in lobbying. The university's policy on Federal and State Lobbying and Political Activity can be found in the Policies and Procedures Manual at 10.09. Evening Violent Incident Defense Strategies training sessions

UNI Police will offer evening Violent Incident Defense Strategies (V.I.D.S.) sessions starting March 27, in the State College Room, MAU. V.I.D.S. training helps individuals increase their decision-making ability and chances of survival during an active shooter or violent incident. Meet the Pros

UNI's chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) will host Meet the Pros, an event designed to prepare college students for careers in design, marketing, communications and English at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, March 28, in 002 SAB. These pros use the power of copy, typography, and motion to grow and develop brands. Designed to prepare college students for careers in advertising, Meet the Pros is a networking event and panel discussion where students can ask questions, find advice and learn what it's like to work in the industry.

Resiliency: prevail and persevere

Life challenges can occur both in our work lives and personal lives. Faculty and staff are invited to a one-hour informational session at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 17, in the CME. This session aims to assist employees in strategizing ways to be resilient, persevere and remain successful during challenging times. Earth Week Photo Contest reception

All UNI faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the first annual Earth Week Photo Contest reception at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 26, in the State Room, MAU.  Enjoy appetizers and a short photo presentation from graduate student Ben Hoksch detailing his recent kayak travels on the Mississippi River. The top 20 photos will be displayed in a gallery setting and the top three cash prize winners will be announced.
