Common read nominations sought for 2014-15

The UNI community is beginning the selection process for the common read for the 2014-15 academic year. The book must relate to the theme "Media & Social Media" and will be used in the curriculum for the First-Year Cornerstone class, provide inspiration for a Strayer-Wood Theatre production and bring together the campus and community in discussion around critical issues. Please consider recommending a book for this campus-wide project. Submit nominations online by noon, Tuesday, Oct. 1. UNI RAINN Day

RAINN Day (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) is an annual campaign to raise awareness and educate students about sexual violence on college campuses. "The Line," a short film that documents real-life stories of victims of sexual assault, will be shown at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 24, in 115 SRL. A panel discussion will follow.

Redeker Center grand re-opening

The Redeker Center grand re-opening and Panther Village Phase II dedication will take place from 2 to 4 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 9. The program will be in Piazza Dining Center at 2:05 p.m.; refreshments at Panther Village lobby and tours of the new dining and apartment spaces will follow the program.

Faculty and staff with lobbying contacts

Lobbying activity from July 1 to Sept. 30, 2013 must be reported. In compliance with the Lobbying Disclosure Act of 1995 and the Honest and Open Government Act of 2007, UNI files quarterly reports on specific lobbying issues and the expenses incurred in lobbying. The university's policy on Federal and State Lobbying and Political Activity is posted online. Reports must be filed each quarter. Required credit card compliance training

Everyone who accepts, processes or handles credit card information as a form of payment on behalf of the university must attend UNI Credit Card Compliance training annually. The compliance training will be offered online via eLearning. The training takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes. Training must be completed by Sept. 27. Small Group Instructional Diagnosis

Small Group Instructional Diagnosis (SGID) is a simple method of mid-semester classroom evaluation that uses a trained facilitator to conduct a structured discussion with students. If you are interested in having a SGID done in one of your classes, please contact Susan Hill. Summer Fellowship awards are competitive and recipients are selected by a faculty committee. Supreme Court panel discussion

Last year the U.S. Supreme Court made major decisions on same-sex marriage, voting rights, affirmative action and other issues. This year, the court will consider cases on campaign finance reform and abortion. UNI to host Military and Veterans State conference

UNI will host the annual Military and Veterans State Conference Monday, Sept. 23. The keynote presentation will be given by Meredith Kleykamp, University of Maryland professor of sociology. Breakout sessions will focus on the unique aspects of military and family culture, how colleges and universities can help military members succeed, and tools to help overcome the challenges of transitioning back into civilian life. MAP-Works instructional workshops

MAP-Works is an early intervention system for UNI first-year students, which supports student success and retention. MAP-Works allows faculty and staff to identify students who are struggling during the transition to college, and get them connected to resources early in the semester. Payroll self service direct deposit is available

Employees can set up, or make changes to, their payroll direct-deposit information. Faculty and staff should make changes at least five business days before payday, and students three business days, for it to be effective for that pay date. Texting in class: does it result in lower grades?

Scott Ketelsen named director of University Relations

Scott Ketelsen has been named director of University Relations. Ketelsen is currently director for Marketing and Media Production at the University of Iowa. He is a 1982 graduate of UNI and a strong Panther supporter. Ketelsen will oversee university communications and marketing efforts to continue to support overall enrollment goals and the university's strategic plan. He will assume his new duties on Sept. 16.

UNI will host acclaimed historian Doris Kearns Goodwin on Wednesday, Oct. 2, as part of the Joy Cole Corning Leadership Lecture Series. A special Q-and-A session for students is scheduled for 4 p.m. in the GBPAC; her formal lecture is at 7:30 p.m. in the GBPAC. Adobe Creative Cloud Campus Licensing provides students (only in UNI computer labs), faculty and staff with Adobe software. Details are posted on the ITS website. This software is available for installation on all UNI computers. The capability for a work-at-home offering (for faculty and staff) is in the works but not yet available. Lifelong University offers "Where Does my Food Come From?"
