PSE will host a UNI student garage sale

A UNI student garage sale will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 3, in the Gilchrist parking lot. Sale items can be donated May 1-3; rent a table for $5. Annual spring plant sale

Live Healthy Iowa achievements at UNI

In the 2014 Live Healthy Iowa 10 Week Wellness Challenge, UNI participants lost 294 pounds and recorded 589,031 minutes of physical activity. Congratulations to Bill Henninger, individual leader in minutes of physical activity, and Bryan Van Donslear, individual leader in weight loss. Lynda Yates, Macquarie University, will discuss "Communication, Language & Preparing for the Workplace" from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m., April 28, in 115 SRL. Her talk will address issues faced by adult second-language learners in adapting to underlying expectations about how to talk at work, focusing on research in the childcare, teaching and medical professions.

SAI clothing drive

Sigma Alpha Iota women's music fraternity will host a clothing drive from noon to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 3, in the mosaic area outside of Russell Hall. Students and faculty can drop off clothing, shoes and other items of apparel. In-season women's clothing will be donated to the House of Hope and all other items will be donated to the Salvation Army.

Earth Week celebration activities

Bring in at least five plastic bags to exchange for one reusable UNI bag from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday, April 21, outside Maucker Union. Limit one bag per person. The 2014 UNI Earth Day Fair will be held outside Maucker Union from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 22. Sample maple syrup made from campus trees, help start seedlings for the UNI student garden, get a free bike tune up and learn how to get involved.

Alison Suen, lecturer in philosophy at Vanderbilt University and UNI alumna, will lecture on "The Table And The Bedroom: The Intersections Between Animal Ethics and Feminism," at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 17, in 115 SRL. Her lecture will explore the parallels between the exploitation of animals and the exploitation of women.

Baker Hall update

Contractors are bringing in and compacting fill dirt and hauling rubble away from the Baker Hall site. The water main near Wright Hall is scheduled to be replaced April 16. Donate books to raise funds for Room to Read, an organization focused on increasing literacy rates across the world. A seminar on the utility of practicing yoga for stress management will be from 2 to 3 p.m., April 23, in 109 CME.
