UNI unites with Brazil for global partnerships

If someone were to ask what the similarities between Iowa and Brazil are, you'd probably have to stop and think a moment. Iowa is "America's Heartland." It's cold during the winter and can be very hot in the summer. Most of Iowa is used for agriculture; crops cover 60 percent of the state. It's the nation's largest producer of ethanol and corn, and some years is the largest producer of soybeans as well.

Getting to the root of the matter

Floods and soil erosion, conditions that have been worsening in the Midwest over the last few years, can rob Iowa of its fertile soil. Although many solutions have been proposed, such as levees, terraces and wetlands, they are often short term. "To address the problem at its source, we have to look at the function of plants on the landscape," said Laura Jackson, University of Northern Iowa professor of biology.

UNI hosts Bully director and producer

Alex Libby, a 12-year-old from Sioux City, Iowa, rode the bus to school every morning, just as thousands of other students across the nation do. But, Libby's experience was less than enjoyable. He was relentlessly teased, pushed, shoved and called names in a space that was supposed to be safe for students. Unfortunately, this has become a common scene on bus routes, in schools, on playgrounds and in everyday life. It's called bullying, and more than 13 million American children will be bullied this year.
