Visit UNI at the Iowa State Fair
What has 30,000 Panther tattoos, 22,000 athletic posters, 5,000 Panther bracelets and nearly 200 alumni volunteers? The ever-popular University of Northern Iowa exhibit at the Iowa State Fair! The university has been hosting an exhibit in the Varied Industries Building during the 10-day fair since the early 1990s, all with the help of alumni and employee volunteers.
It takes nearly 200 alumni plus an additional 40 or so campus employees to staff the 12 hours each day the fair is open - and apply those 30,000 tattoos. "Alumni return year after year and really enjoy the opportunity to represent UNI to thousands of alumni and fair visitors," said Amy Mohr, assistant director of alumni relations.
This year, Panther fans can take their picture next to a larger-than-life backdrop of Ali Farohkmanesh sinking a three-point shot against Kansas and with a life-size cutout of 7-foot-tall Jordan Egelseder. On Sat., Aug. 14, several members of the 2009-2010 UNI men's basketball team, which made its first NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance this year, distributed commemorative posters highlighting the men's and women's basketball teams' record-breaking seasons. The players also signed autographs and the ESPY Award for Best Upset, presented by ESPN, was on display.
University Book & Supply is again partnering with the university to enhance UNI's presence at the fair and is selling UNI clothing, Panther gear and UNI souvenirs.
The fair runs through Sunday, Aug. 22 - stop by and say hello!
