Panther Pride rides on RAGBRAI
UNI professor Nancy Hamilton enjoys a break after the day's ride.
UNI got to show their Panther Pride in Coralville during RAGBRAI’s final overnight stop on the weeklong bicycle ride across Iowa. Coralville hosted the first College Spirit Day in RAGBRAI’s 39 years, and they hope to make it a new tradition.
“For many years, our riders have been showcasing their college spirit while riding through our great state of Iowa and it was our goal to create a special day of fun that we could recognize the nation’s colleges and universities,” said TJ Juskiewicz, RAGBRAI director.
Riders and fans from UNI, Iowa State and Iowa, among other institutions, donned their respective cycling jerseys and set out to have some good ole’ college fun.
Coralville transformed itself into tailgate heaven with food vendors lining the streets, college booths with free goodies and university mascots greeting their devoted fans.
College Spirit Day culminated in a RAGBRAI Mascot Challenge. The Panthers, Cyclones, Hawkeyes, Bulldogs and Peacocks all battled it out in an obstacle course, which included TC teaming up with Herky in the three-legged race.
“The reaction from our alumni, fans and RAGBRAI riders to UNI’s presence at RAGBRAI’s College Spirit Day was great,” said Jess Nissen, marketing specialist at UNI. “We heard from many people who were happy to see UNI represented in Coralville.”
