Peer to peer (p2p) file sharing is used to both download files and make them available for upload to other computers. Some common peer to peer clients are LimeWire, Kazaa, FrostWire, and BitTorrent.  More information on removing peer to peer software may be found here.

Dangers of File Sharing Programs

File sharing can be a useful and powerful tool; however, due to the nature of this technology, it carries with it a variety of potential problems:

The following are steps for how to determine your operating system type. This is useful information in the event you call the helpdesk or require assistance from an RCC, as they will want to know what type of operating system they are troubleshooting.

Overview

Have you connected and went through the XpressConnect process in WiFi-UNI -Setup?

This wizard will configure your device to properly connect to WiFi-UNI.

Do you have the correct login information?

WiFi-UNI uses your CatID login. This login is the one used in computer labs. Please verify that you can login to a computer lab and test your login.

Have you tried different locations?

Power outages or a period of inactivity can cause a computer to display the ResNet registration screen even though the computer is already registered. The instructions below should allow you to successfully restore Internet access.

If you continue to have problems after following these instructions, try shutting down the computer, plugging your network cable into the other orange data jack, and then turn your computer back on. If you are still having difficulties after this, please call the ResNet helpdesk at 273-RSNT (273-7768).

Note: Make sure you have your OS X CD, your product key--which is usually located with the disk package--, any driver disks or other hardware that came with your computer, and the disks for any programs you want re-installed. If you do not have an OS X CD, you may purchase one from Apple.

How To Reformat

1. Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.

ResNet requires a certain level of security in order for a computer to be connected. The information below will explain in greater detail how this can be accomplished.

Microsoft provides a simple guide on how to protect your computer here.

Windows 8:

1. Open the wireless menu by selecting the logo in the right hand corner.

2. Select the network and right click to bring up more options. Select Forget this network.

Windows 7 & Vista:

1. Open the Start Menu and search for manage wireless networks

Note: Your computer may contain a wireless network card as well as a wired network card, or contain multiple network cards. When looking for the computer's MAC address, be sure to find the MAC address associated with the network card you wish to use. If you are connecting through Wi-Fi, you must use the MAC address associated with the wireless network card, and users plugged in through ethernet cable require their wired MAC address.
