News and AnnouncementsNew Website LaunchedWe have updated the look, feel, and functionality of our website! Some new features include a Classroom Reservation WebForm, a Class List Verification WebForm, FERPA training information, an extensive FAQ section, and an Ad Hoc Report Request WebForm. Take a look around; we believe you will find it very helpful and user-friendly. Fall 2010 Commencement: Many Changes UnderwayGraduation is always an exciting time of the year for students, faculty, staff, and parents alike! This year, we will be implementing a few changes that, we believe, will make the day even more personal and memorable for our students and their family and friends. Academic Course RenumberingAs many of you are already aware, the academic course renumbering is underway and will debut in the Fall 2011 Schedule of Classes. A “crosswalk” is currently being developed that will display what the current numbers are and what they will be changing to; it will be made available in the middle of the Fall 2010 semester to the university community under the “Faculty and Staff” tab on our website and from the University Catalog website. For your convenience, a copy of the “crosswalk” will accompany our Spring 2011 PAWSitive Impact newsletter. New Student Information System: Increasing Efficiency and Meeting NeedsProgress is being made on the new student information system, and we will soon be gearing up for the debut of the Student Records module with Fall 2011 advance registration. Conversion of student records data, configuration of the system, and training will occur during the Fall 2010 semester and beyond. Throughout this process, we look forward to partnering with you to ensure the system enhances services to UNI students. Some of the enhancements UNI students, faculty, and staff can look forward to are highlighted below: Graduate Assistant Joins Our TeamMarissa Whitney, graduate student in the Postsecondary Education: Student Affairs program, is working in our office during the 2010-11 academic year as a Graduate Assistant. Marissa has worked in our office previously as an undergraduate student, and she brings a wealth of knowledge and skills with her. Regulatory News and UpdatesHigher Education Opportunity Act: Federal Textbook Price Disclosure LawThe Higher Education Opportunity Act, which went into effect July 1, 2010, requires colleges to release textbook information as early as possible, so that students have plenty of time to shop around for affordable textbooks. This law benefits students financially by ensuring that they have timely access to affordable course materials. Additionally, it will have a direct impact on the instructors who are selecting textbooks and/or course materials for their classes. Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA): Letters of RecommendationAs faculty and staff members, we are often approached by students throughout the year and asked to write letters of recommendation on their behalf. This is an important responsibility, and as such, we want to provide you will a few helpful hints to keep your recommendations FERPA-compliant, and, as a result, will protect both your rights and the rights of the student.
