Scott
Voigt and Steph Weiand, Owners
TurnKey Associates, L.C.
Waterloo, Iowa

Careers
in architecture and the mutual desire to own a successful business
led Scott Voigt and Steph Weiand to open Turnkey Associates L.C.
early this year. Voigt says he has wanted to own his own business
for 25 years, but was waiting to find the right partner. Weiand
had only thought about entrepreneurship for two years before he
found Voigt. When the two joined forces, they knew that it was
now or never.
TKA’s
tagline, “The Key to Facilitating Your Building Needs,” sums up
their company. They design, build, and furnish commercial buildings,
primarily financial institutions. They also do retail and light
industrial work. They serve as architects, general contractors,
interior designers, and supply office furniture, security equipment,
and signage. TKA offers services to nine different states, with
their main office located at the UNI Regional Business Center.
TurnKey Associates L.C. is successful because it is the only
firm in the area that has in-house construction, architects, and
furnishings. Other firms partner with companies to provide their
services. By having these services in-house, Voigt and Weiand
say, “We can provide more for less: bigger buildings at a higher
quality for a more competitive price.”
Voigt and
Weiand say the greatest challenge involved with successful entrepreneurship
is juggling all the different aspects of owning and operating
a business. Their keys to success are knowledge and confidence
in their abilities to succeed, good people and products, hard
work, and financial backing. When asked if they would do it over
again, they say “yes” without any hesitation.
Weiand says
the greatest reward of owning TKA is, “the satisfaction of being
able to meet new customers and not only establish business relationships,
but also become friends.” Voigt agrees, and adds that, “it is
nice to be your own boss.”
Voigt and
Weiand were unlike many clients of the UNI RBC. Their business
plan was complete; financial backing arranged. All they needed
was an office. They moved in to the UNI RBC, and now they have
a successful business that provides valuable services to their
clients.
