Position Description

 

Assistant Vice President for Marketing and Public Relations
University of Northern Iowa

 

Provides vision and leadership in the establishment of comprehensive university marketing, public relations and branding strategies; directs the office of University Marketing & Public Relations including the University’s print services; works collaboratively with all entities to fully integrate institutional marketing and public relations efforts and promotes a heightened image of the University regionally, nationally and internationally.

  1. Provides vision and leadership for all university marketing and public relations initiatives; assists with development and implementation of university branding strategies to internal and external audiences; evaluates external markets through market research; develops recommendations on pricing and promotional strategies and initiates tactics for the delivery of services; develops and implements marketing and public relations policies and programs that will assist the university in meeting its goals; and develops evaluation methods to assess effectiveness of such policies and programs.

  2. Provides ongoing marketing and public relations counsel to the UNI President and Cabinet.

  3. Develops and directs implementation of programs and activities that will foster public interest in the university and participation in its activities; and identifies activities that will convey positive institutional image to engender public support for the university and its objectives. Convenes the University Issues Group to advise the President and Cabinet on communication, public relations and institutional issues and programs.

  4. Pursues and strengthens mutually beneficial relationships with external constituencies; assists with the development of a coordinated network of alumni, parents , and friends to provide support for the major goals of the university; and establishes, coordinates, and strengthens relationships with other educational institutions and foundations, the business community, and local, state, and federal governmental entities.

  5. Directs the Office of University Marketing & Public Relations including UNI’s Print Services; assists staff in developing and implementing goals and objectives that will achieve results for the university's public relations and marketing program; hires and trains staff, appraises their performance, and encourages their professional development; establishes office of public relations policies and procedures; and develops and administers public relations office budget and operational accounts; serves as spokesperson for the university or directs individual(s) who may serve in that role.

  6. Serves as the University's marketing and public relations liaison to the Board of Regents and to legislative and governmental committees as appropriate.

Necessary Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in marketing, public relations, communications, or related area plus at least five years administrative leadership in marketing and/or public relations required. Demonstrated effective team-building and leadership skills and a demonstrated ability to develop and execute short- and long-term objectives also required.
