UNI Art and Architecture Committee selects art to be displayed in Lang Hall

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- "Iowa Landscape by Iowa Artists" is the theme of 54 art works to be hung throughout the newly-renovated Lang Hall on the University of Northern Iowa campus. Installation will begin Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 15 and 16, on one floor of the building, with the remainder of the works scheduled to be installed prior to the beginning of the 2002 spring semester, Monday, Jan. 14.

"Art and Architecture Committee members felt that this century old-building full of wonderful oak molding, wainscoting, and high, spacious hallways, would lend itself well to two-dimensional works for its interior spaces," said Mary Frisbee Johnson, head of the UNI department of art and chair of the Art and Architecture Committee. "We invited Iowa artists to submit works for consideration for purchase."

The committee sought a broad exploration of the notion of landscape, including land, farm, water, sky, weather, city and garden using such media as painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, computer prints and collage, according to Darrell Taylor, acting director of the UNI Gallery of Art and committee member.

Artists with work chosen by the Art and Architecture Committee include: Teresa Paschke, Ames; Catherine Jones Davies, Anamosa; Fritz Goeckner, Burlington; Richard Colburn, frje echeverria and Barbara Fedeler, all of Cedar Falls; Tom Stancliffe, New Hartford; Margaret Whiting, Waterloo; Margery Hibbard, Waverly; Dennis Kaven, Granger; and, represented by the Olson-Larsen Galleries of West Des Moines, Pat Edwards,, Gary Bowling, Bill Innes, Betsy Margolius, Genie Patrick, Ken Smith and Ellen Wagener.

Approximately $40,000, or one-half percent from the project budget as provided by the "Art in State Buildings" funding mandate, was used to purchase the works for Lang Hall. A reception to honor the artists will be held in the spring at a date to be determined.
