University of Northern Iowa ROTC student from Newton to be commissioned

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Derik W. Vanbaale of Newton will be commissioned by the Department of Military Science at the University of Northern Iowa as a U.S. Army Second Lieutenant Saturday, Dec. 16. The 9 a.m. commissioning will be held at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity house, 1113 West 23rd St. Lt. Col. Michael De Puglio, head and professor of military science at UNI, will preside over the ceremony.

Vanbaale will be commissioned into active duty with the U.S. Army and will serve in its field artillery branch. He will receive a bachelor of arts degree in history during UNI's graduation ceremony at 11 a.m. that day. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wade Vanbaale, 729 N. 4th Avenue, Newton.

Since 1982, 261 students have received their Army Officer's Commission through the UNI Army ROTC program.
