UNI associate provost receives WAYUP XIX recognition award

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Susan Koch, University of Northern Iowa associate provost and professor of health promotion and education, received a recognition award at the recent WAYUP XIX conference in Amana for outstanding achievement in leadership and mentoring.

The award recognizes a person who has made significant contributions, sustained over time, toward the development and advancement of women in higher education.

"Susan has been particularly active in encouraging women to pursue higher education and university careers, in light of the need to rectify the gender disparity that exists in these areas. Young women look up to her, and many of them have followed in her footsteps pursuing careers in the health and human rights field under her guidance," said Michele Yehieli, UNI associate professor of health promotion and education, and Koch's nominator. "It is no understatement to say that she has helped lead an entire generation of young women towards promoting social justice, world peace and the elimination of disparity around the world."

Koch joined the UNI faculty in 1983. Koch and Yehieli co-founded the UNI Global Health Corps, which has grown into a million-dollar, award-winning organization that has trained more than 300 students in cross-cultural health, and served more than 20,000 low income clients around the world.

The WAYUP conference, specifically designed for women in higher education, is open to all interested persons.
