PLEASE NOTE: The date for the Kwanzaa celebration has been changed from Dec. 7, to Dec. 8.

Kwanzaa to be celebrated at the University of Northern Iowa, Friday, Dec. 8

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa— A celebration of Kwanzaa will be held at 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 8, in the Maucker Union Hemisphere Lounge on the University of Northern Iowa campus.

The event will feature Imani Nia Productions with Chicago poets who will perform poetry and prose exploring the Kwanzaa experience. Those performing will be: Brenda Matthews, O.D., Triple Black, and Sorrow.

Based on the African tradition of harvest festivals, Kwanzaa is a time to share and reflect on the trials and triumphs of the past year. Displays of the seven principles, or Nguzo Saba, can be viewed throughout the week (Dec. 4-8) at several sites across campus, including the Center for Multicultural Education, Maucker Union and the Wellness and Recreation Center.

The seven principles are: Umoja, or unity; Kujichagulia, or self-determination; Ujima, or collective work and responsibility; Ujamaa, or cooperative economics; Nia, or purpose; Kuumba, or creativity; and Imani, or faith.

The Kwanzaa celebration is sponsored by the UNI Multicultural Activities and Programs Committee, and the Retention Office.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the UNI Student Activities Office at (319) 273-2683.

"De-Stress Days" taking place during finals week at the University of Northern Iowa

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa— The University of Northern Iowa will host "De-Stress Days" for its students, faculty and staff, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 11, 12 and 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., in Maucker Union. The event is designed to alleviate the stress of fall finals and the semester's end.

The events will be in the Union's Embassy, Colombia and Ambassador Rooms. Participants can receive free hand and shoulder massages; listen to relaxing music; watch humorous videos; eat popcorn; or pet puppies and kittens.

Linda Miller, UNI wellness resource coordinator who has coordinated De-Stress Days since December 1996, says activities such as "simply petting a puppy or kitten have been shown to assist people in relieving stress. There has been clear research that shows this helps reduce blood pressure, lowers the heart rate and makes people calmer and more relaxed."

The event was first held in May of 1996, as a part of UNI finals week, when Ken Jacobsen, University Health Services counselor, adapted and expanded a program from the University of Minnesota, which provided a quiet music room for its students during finals week.

The "De-Stress Days" are sponsored by UNI Wellness and Recreation Services. For more information, contact Miller at (319) 273-6119.
