UNI hosts panel for fathers with disabled children
The UNI Department of Special Education will host a special panel for fathers of children with disabilities, Monday, Dec. 3, at 5:15 p.m. in Schindler Education Center, Room 321.
The fathers all are participants in a project developed by Donna Raschke, professor in the department. Raschke's model allows for the co-teaching of a UNI course, "Home Intervention Services to Infants and Toddlers with Disabilities and their Families," by a parent and professor. The project is funded by a $6,000 grant from the Iowa Department of Education.
"Now students learn not only what the literature says about best practices, but they hear first-hand authentic feedback from a parent about how practitioners' practices might be modified or transformed to better meet individual family needs," said Raschke.
During Monday's panel, the fathers will discuss their "trials and tribulations, and talk about which methods were most effective in providing support." Other panels, including those featuring siblings, will follow at later dates.
