The Current Research on Women Forum Series at the University of Northern Iowa will continue Monday, Dec. 4

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa —The 2000-2001 Current Research on Women (CROW) Forum Series will continue with Sheryl L. Welte-Emch, UNI assistant professor of psychology, at noon, Monday, Dec. 4, in the Maucker Union Embassy Room. Welte-Emch, who also works at UNI's Center for the Enhancement of Teaching, will present “Good Students, Good Daughters: Girls and Women Struggling with Voice and Silence to Meet Social and Cultural Expectations.”

Welte-Emch will focus her discussion on her cross-cultural study of women college students in the United States and Bangladesh. She said this research suggested that “social and cultural factors influence women's ways of knowing— their beliefs about knowledge, beliefs about themselves as knowers, and how they come to know these things— both in and out of the classroom.”

Welte-Emch is in her second year at UNI. She teaches psychology, sociology and anthropology in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. She holds a doctorate in educational psychology from Michigan State University.

The next CROW Forum lecture will be at noon Monday, Feb. 5. Leah White, UNI assistant professor of communication, will present “Overcoming Nazi Oppression: Charlotte Salomon, Autobiography and the Reconstruction of Self,” in the Maucker Union Embassy Room.

The CROW Forum Series is sponsored by the UNI Graduate Program in Women's Studies. It is open to the public, free of charge.

Jay Edelnant will present the final lecture in the Millennium Lecture Series at the University of Northern Iowa, Monday, Dec. 4.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa—Jay Edelnant, University of Northern Iowa professor of performance studies, will present a lecture recital, entitled “Technology, Deconstruction and Pedagogy,” at 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 4, in the Maucker Union Expansion. This will be the final lecture of the UNI Millennium Lecture Series. It is free and open to the public.

Edelnant will turn his satirical attention to scholarship, as he presents an evening of solo performance based on millennial themes, such as the use and abuse of technology, deconstruction and the revisionist historical treatment of text, and the art of teaching in the age of litigation.

During the millennial year, selected members of the UNI faculty presented Millennium Lectures, five in the spring and five in the fall. Edelnant's recital is the last in the series. All lectures included the presentation of a scholarly paper, and some included artistic performances and exhibits.

“The Millennium Lecture Series was conceived and presented as a yearlong conversation among those of us who are fortunate enough to experience this historical moment, which comes just once in 20 lifetimes,” said Aaron Podolefsky, UNI provost and vice president for academic affairs. “It has given us an opportunity to consider our histories, our lives today and our futures as individuals, as members of Iowa families and communities, and as members of the larger human family.”

For more information, call Edelnant at (319) 273-6389.
