CROW forum to explore life and work of author
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa's Current Research on Women (CROW) Forum series will continue at noon, Monday, Dec. 3, with "Writings from the Borderzone: Malika Mokeddem's Poetics of Recuperation," in Baker Hall, Room161.
Deirdre Bucher Heistad, UNI assistant professor of modern languages, will explore the life and work of the Algerian born writer, Malika Mokeddem, who seeks to rewrite Algerian history through the eyes of women. In doing so, Mokeddem attempts to recover lost and forbidden territories like oral tradition and nomadism, while at the same time affirming new ones, including gender equality, according to Heistad.
"Writing from an insider/outsider perspective and by retelling recent Algerian history in terms of betrayal, Mokeddem's semi-autobiographical works lead her audience to better understand why she, as well as her heroines, have opted to live somewhere between tradition/modernity and Algeria/France," said Heistad.
Heistad received her Ph.D. in interdisciplinary French studies and a graduate minor in women's studies from the University of Illinois. She has been an assistant professor at UNI since August 2000.
The CROW Forum series will continue Feb. 4, 2002, with "A Young Woman's Guide to Growing Older," by Julia Wallace, professor and dean, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
For more information on the series, contact Phyllis Baker, director, UNI Graduate Program in Women's Studies, (319) 273- 2109.
