UNI graduate receives Wall Street Journal award

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- University of Northern Iowa May 2001 graduate, Catherine MacDonald, Lexington, Ky., was recently named a recipient of the Wall Street Journal 2001 Student Achievement Award. MacDonald graduated with a B.A. in economics: general economics.

Across the U.S., 552 college students received recognition from the Wall Street Journal, 16 from Iowa colleges and universities. The Educational Service Bureau of Dow Jones developed The Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award Program in 1948. Since its inception, hundreds of colleges and universities throughout the U.S. have chosen this award to honor students whose academic performance is considered exceptional.

As part of the award, MacDonald received a one-year subscription to the Wall Street Journal, a congratulatory letter and a paper-weight. MacDonald will have her name displayed on a plaque at UNI.

UNI resident assistants serving for 2001-2002 academic year

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- __(Name/s)__ of __(Hometown)__ is/are among the 90 students serving as resident assistants (RAs) for the 2001-2002 academic year at the University of Northern Iowa. He\She is a __(class)__ majoring in __(major)__.

Resident assistants are Department of Residence staff members whose responsibility is to serve as student advisors to approximately 50 students in a residence hall. As advisors, the RAs provide assistance to the individuals with personal, interpersonal and academic concerns. The RAs also support residents in the development of a cohesive living and learning group.

RAs are certified in first aid and CPR, and they receive extensive training in conflict mediation. They are the university's contact for students in the residence halls. They plan and present educational programs, offer planned and spontaneous social activities and provide academic support for students. RAs earn room and board and a stipend as compensation for their responsibilities.

"RAs are vital to the success of the University of Northern Iowa residence system," said Lyn Redington, associate director of the UNI Department of Residence/Housing. "They provide models for leadership while maintaining high academic standards."
