CEDAR FALLS, Iowa William R. Downs, University of Northern Iowa professor of social work, will present the fourth installment of the UNI Millennium Lecture Series fall session at 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 13, in the Maucker Union Expansion.
In his presentation, The Third Millennium: Hearing Women's Voices, Downs will argue that with violence and abuse as major causes of health problems for women throughout the world, approaches to addressing violence against women will need to undergo a major shift in theory and practice.
During the millennial year, selected members of the UNI faculty are presenting 10 different Millennium Lectures. All lectures include the presentation of a scholarly paper, and some include artistic performances and exhibits.
We see the Millennium Lecture Series as a yearlong conversation among those of us who are fortunate enough to experience this historical moment, which comes just once in 20 lifetimes, said Aaron Podolefsky, UNI Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. It is an opportunity to consider our histories, our lives today and our futures as individuals, as members of Iowa families and communities, and as members of the larger human family.
The final lecture in the series will be Monday, Dec. 4, when Jay Edelnant, professor of performance studies, will present Technology, Deconstruction and Pedagogy: A Lecture Recital.
