NOTE TO ASSIGNMENT EDITORS: The UNI chapter of PRSSA has planned a donor recognition ceremony for 4 p.m., Monday, Oct. 30, in the Curris Business Building, Room 109.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa The University of Northern Iowa's chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) hosted the 2000 PRSSA National Conference in Chicago, Oct. 20 through Oct. 24. Held in conjunction with the Public Relations Society of America's national conference, it is the largest national gathering of public relations professionals and students. This year, a record-breaking 1,355 students participated in the event.
This is the first time in the 32-year history of PRSSA, that a chapter from the state of Iowa has hosted a national conference. The UNI chapter was selected for this honor in a competitive bidding process at last year's conference in Anaheim, Calif.
Four UNI students served as conference organizers. Dirk Munson, a junior from Cedar Rapids, was the conference coordinator, responsible for overseeing all operations. Sergei Golitsinski, a graduate student from St. Petersburg, Russia, was programs director. His responsibilities included planning all sessions and maintaining the conference web site.
Melanie Sabelka, a senior from Decorah, was communications director, and was responsible for the layout and graphics of all the conference publications. Angie Grimstad, a LaPorte City senior, was logistics director, and was in charge of 36 volunteers from the UNI chapter, who traveled to Chicago to help at the conference.
__(Name)__of ___(Hometown)___ was among the UNI volunteers, helping at the conference.
Cedric L. Bess, PRSSA national president, said: My hat goes off to all the UNI volunteers for making the 2000 PRSSA National Conference a tremendous success. It would not have been possible to successfully coordinate the largest conference ever without their enthusiastic support.
Gayle Pohl, associate professor of communication studies, is faculty advisor to the conference committee and the UNI chapter. The 2000 National Conference team has worked very hard to give PRSSA members across the country networking and learning opportunities never before realized, said Pohl.
At this year's conference, the UNI chapter received the Outstanding Chapter Web Site award. Over the past two years the chapter was the recipient of the Outstanding Chapter Firm, Outstanding Chapter Newsletter and Outstanding Chapter awards.
The UNI PRSSA chapter received a total of $4,665 from the following contributors to subsidize PRSSA members' travel to, and participation in, the conference: UNI Department of Communication Studies, UNI College of Humanities and Fine Arts, UNI Intercollegiate Funding Committee, Cedar Valley PRSA chapter, Central Iowa PRSA chapter, Varsity Cleaners, Nagle Signs, Becker\Underwood Engineering, as well as ME&V and CMF&Z public relations firms.
