UNI professors help neighborhoods understand Islam, Afghanistan
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- University of Northern Iowa professors will be part of a series of programs to educate local neighborhood coalitions about the religion of Islam and the culture of Afghanistan. The next event, "Who is My Neighbor? Afghanistan and Islam," hosted by the Black Hawk Area Religious Coalition, will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
Featured speakers will be Mohammed Fahmy, head of the Department of Industrial Technology and a leader in the local Islamic community; Philip Mauceri, associate professor in the Department of Political Science where he teaches a course on terrorism; and Bill Witt, state representative.
Other sessions are scheduled for:
Sunday, Oct. 28, 7 p.m., Trinity Lutheran Church, Waterloo
Monday, Oct. 29, First United Methodist Church, Waterloo, (with Fahmy, Witt and Kenneth Atkinson, assistant professor in the Department of Philosophy and Religion).

Perry Elementary TAG class wins Space Week Challenge
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The sixth grade talented and gifted class at Perry Elementary School won the Space Week Science Challenge, a contest open to all K-12 Iowa classrooms. The winners were announced Wednesday, Oct. 24, by the Iowa Space Grant Consortium, one of the sponsors of the contest.
As winners, the 11 students, taught by Stephanie Francis, will receive a Meade ETX telescope with field tripod for their classroom and a field trip to the Science Station and IMAX Theatre in Cedar Rapids. Teachers and students at Perry Elementary School have won an inservice training session from the Extension--Science, Engineering and Technology team and curriculum materials.
Each of the 20 classrooms that entered the contest this year will receive the Classroom Space Travel Kit from Team Encounter.
Contestants listened to special editions of the "Earth and Sky" radio program broadcast by WHO Radio (1040 AM) during Space Week, Oct. 4-10. Topics included asteroid extinction, meteorites, Jupiter and the Moon. They then took a quiz based on the content of the radio programs and supporting activities.
Other sponsors of the contest were WHO Radio and the "Earth and Sky" radio program. The Iowa Space Grant Consortium is a NASA-supported organization aimed at increasing interest in aerospace education and research. Its academic members are the University of Northern Iowa, Iowa State University, the University of Iowa and Drake University.

UNI Ethnic Student Promoters accept new members
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Several students at the University of Northern Iowa have been chosen to participate in Ethnic Student Promoters (ESP), a group fostering ethnic diversity by assisting the Office of Admissions with its multicultural campus visitation program.
_ (Name) _ of _ (Hometown)_ is one of 36 Ethnic Student Promoters for the 2001-02 academic year. He/She is a (Classification) , studying (Major) .
According to Juanita Wright, UNI assistant director of admissions and one of ESP's advisers, the group's responsibilities range from giving campus tours and corresponding with prospective students to attending multicultural and leadership programs throughout the state. Wright advises the group along with Ron Green, admissions counselor.
ESP was formed in 1992 to provide prospective students with information about the university from multicultural students point-of-view.
To become a member of ESP, students must be in good standing with the university and must have a desire to promote UNI. Members are expected to attend monthly group meetings and take part in a number of ESP activities throughout the school year.

Price Laboratory School's 14th annual banquet and benefit auction to occur on Nov. 9
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Price Laboratory School's (PLS) annual banquet and benefit auction, "Festival of Friends," will take place on Friday, Nov. 9, in the Maucker Union Expansion on the University of Northern Iowa campus.
Alumni and Friends of Price Laboratory School (AFPLS) and Parents and Teachers in Partnership (PTP) sponsor this event to raise money for PLS.
A social hour will begin the evening, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The silent auction will take place during this time, and a cash bar will be available. All auction items have been donated by area businesses, parents, friends, faculty and students of PLS. Proceeds from the auction will fund curriculum enhancements of the school's programs.
A gourmet dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m. PLS students will provide entertainment, and AFPLS will honor three outstanding alumni. This year AFPLS also will honor emeritus faculty member, John Aldrich.
