Three at UNI receive Regents Staff Excellence Awards

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Three University of Northern Iowa staff members have received the 2001 Staff Excellence Awards, given by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.

Recipients are Nancy Bramhall, program administrator for the Individual Studies program; Diane Headington, clerk IV, Office of the Controller; and Gary B. Shontz, controller, university treasurer, university secretary.

The awards are presented annually to staff members who have demonstrated outstanding professional contributions to UNI during their careers. Candidates are nominated by their colleagues and peers.

Bramhall has served UNI for 23 years. Nomination papers, submitted by Karen Cunningham in Individual Studies, indicate her commitment to excellence is reflected in the quality service provided to on-campus students and to students pursuing non-traditional degrees. Bramhall has brought to campus the National Student Exchange, a program that gives UNI students the opportunity to study in another state for one or two semesters.

Headington has been at UNI since 1972. She was nominated by Stephanie Marra of the Controller's Office, who wrote, "she will always go the extra mile to help a student. She is a role model for all UNI employees." Headington has served as secretary, vice chair and chair of the UNI Supervisory/Confidential Merit Personnel group, and was secretary of the Regents Inter-institutional Supervisory and Confidential Advisory Council.

Shontz has served UNI for 27 years. His nomination paper, submitted by Greg Davies of the UNI-Dome, note, "his technical knowledge of accounting and finance and his experience as a former state of Iowa auditor has benefited and given credibility to the university in all aspects of the financial operation." Shontz is treasurer of the UNI Foundation and chairman of the UNI Credit Union; serves on the Position Evaluation Committee in Human Resources, and is chairman of the vice president of administration and finance search committee.

UNI's J.W. Maucker leadership series addresses origin of inequality

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa Student Activities Office will present "Star Power" as part of the J.W. Maucker Leadership Series, from 1 to 3 p.m., Thurs., Oct. 25, in the State College Room of the Maucker Union.

The game allows participants to examine the power and abuse of inequality, changing social systems, and the plight of multiple social classes. "This game demonstrates the different tiers of the social system and how the participants fill the role of society," explained Mike Bobeldyk, program coordinator at Maucker Union. He said the series itself is designed to provide fresh perspectives to contemporary issues relating to diversity, according to Bobeldyk.

The J.W. Maucker Leadership Series is named for the fifth president of UNI, James William Maucker, who served from 1950 to 1970.

The workshop is free and open to the public.

For more information, contact Mike Bobeldyk, program coordinator of Maucker Union, (319) 273-5888.
