Three University of Northern Iowa graduates win top state and national honors for performance on May CPA exam

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Three University of Northern Iowa accounting graduates were honored last month by the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants (ISCPA) at its annual awards banquet in Des Moines.

Mark R. Bracker, formerly of Sanborn and now working for PricewaterhouseCoopers in Dallas, received the ISCPA's Gold Award for having the highest score in the state on the May 2000 uniform certified public accounting (CPA) examination. The Bronze Award for the third highest score went to Allison J. Beckey Castle, formerly of Muscatine, now working for McGladrey & Pullen in Davenport.

John M. Van Utrecht, formerly of New Sharon and now with John Deere in Raleigh, N.C., received “performance with high distinction” recognition for also scoring among the top 120 in the nation.

According to Gerald Smith, UNI professor and head of accounting, ISCPA honors Iowa residents, including any whom the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) has designated in the top 120 scores in the nation. This year, there were six Iowans who qualified in that select group.

In a related report, UNI tied for seventh place nationally for first-time candidates passing the complete exam, with 35.5 percent passing in 1999, the last year for which national figures are available. For the decade from 1990 to 1999, UNI tied for third place among the nation's colleges and universities for the highest percentage of candidates passing all subjects taken on the CPA exam.

Within the state, UNI has continued to produce a disproportionally large percentage of successful exam candidates as well. On the May 1999 CPA exam, UNI alumni made up 44.7 percent of the successful first-time Iowa candidates and 32.3 percent of all Iowa successful candidates from among 26 colleges and universities producing candidates statewide.

The four-part exam includes auditing, business law and professional responsibilities, financial accounting and reporting-business enterprises, and accounting and reporting-other areas.

“We are pleased that our graduates continue to distinguish themselves with the quality of their performances on the professional licensing exam, their career opportunities through employers who come to campus, and the opportunities they are given in their career advancement,” says Smith.

The state's Silver Award winner was Jeffrey A. Wagner, a graduate of Iowa State University.
