UNI hosts renowned opera singer

CEDAR FALLS — Celebrated opera singer Shirley Verrett will present a master class at the University of Northern Iowa, Friday, Nov. 10, at noon in the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. During the master class, the soprano will share her experiences and instruct UNI students in proper technique. Her presentation is part of the university's Minority High School Visitation Day, an annual event designed to increase diversity at UNI.

A graduate of the Julliard School of Music, Verrett has recorded with the likes of Leontyne Price and Placido Domingo. She has performed on Broadway, starred in films and made numerous recordings, all to the enthusiastic praise of critics worldwide. Chosen as a Woman of Distinction by Essence magazine, Verrett served on two White House commissions to preserve American Antiquity. In 1996, she joined the faculty of the University of Michigan School of Music and is now working on her autobiography.

Verrett's appearance is sponsored by the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, the Center for Multicultural Education, and the Office of Admissions.

The public may attend the master class. For more information, contact the UNI School of Music, (319) 273-2024.
