UNI's Wartick receives Sumner Marcus Award

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Steven L. Wartick, professor of management and policy, and head of the University of Northern Iowa's Department of Management, is the 2001 recipient of the Sumner Marcus Award.

This award has been presented annually by the Social Issues in Management Division of the Academy of Management since 1980. The award honors an individual who has made substantial and significant contributions to the Division and to the field of Social Issues in Management/Business and Society.

Wartick has authored and co-authored two books and more than 30 articles relating to the topics of corporate social performance, issues management and business-government relations. He has served as the president of the International Association for Business and Society and as a chair representative for the Academy of Management. More recently, Wartick completed a three-year term as editor of the scholarly journal "Business and Society".

UNI Gallery of Art announces award recipients for 'A Question of Faith'

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Gallery of Art has announced award winners for its current exhibition, "A Question of Faith."

First place was awarded to Joanne Nuss of Santa Fe, New Mexico for her work "Offering III," a cast bronze sculpture, which was exhibited in April at the Agora Gallery in Soho, NY.

Keith Holmes' piece "All Soul’s Day 1993 (Zagreb, Croatia, 1993)" received the second place award. Holmes, of Alexandria, Minn. recently exhibited his work at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.

Third place went to Carol Prusa's "Spew: St. Marina, It’s a Girl, Me/Eat," an egg tempera painting, influenced by Byzantine icon painting techniques. Prusa has exhibited and performed extensively in the Midwest. She lives in Boca Raton, Fla.

Award winners were chosen by distinguished art writer and critic, Eleanor Heartney, contributing editor to "Art in America."

"A Question of Faith" is an all-media, national juried exhibition of new work on display through Oct. 26. The exhibition is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday; noon to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. The Gallery is located on the UNI campus on the main floor of the Kamerick Art Building, at the corner of Hudson Road and West 27th street. UNI men's basketball team sponsors youth clinic

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The UNI men's basketball team will sponsor a youth basketball clinic on Oct. 20 at the UNI Physical Education Center.

The clinic is for children in grades 1-6. Instructing the clinic are players from the UNI men's basketball team. Clinic sessions are from 9 a.m. until noon. or from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.

Attendees will receive a free T-shirt, basketball and a Panther Pass to attend all home UNI men's basketball events.

UNI dance company to hold dance clinic

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa Orchesis Dance Company will hold a Dance Spooktacular Clinic for children, Saturday, Oct. 27. The instruction includes a basic understanding of dance concepts, a jazz performance, lunch, and creative dance activities.

The clinic is designed for children in first through eighth grade. Dance instruction will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the UNI Wellness and Recreation Center. The day will conclude with a performance by the clinic participants at 5:30 p.m. at Crossroads Mall in Waterloo. Participants may dance in a safe Halloween costume or in the Dance Spooktacular T-shirt provided with registration.

Registration for the Spooktacular is $30 and includes a T-shirt with registration by Oct 15. UNI Individual Events Speech Team starts new season

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa Individual Events Speech Team recently traveled to its first tournament of the year at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., the "Show Me Swing."

Senior Nikki Vap, English teaching major from Manchester, placed third in program oral interpretation, fourth in informative speaking and sixth in duo interpretation, along with junior Tanya Newnam, English major from Rock Falls, Ill.,.

Sophomore Sarah Gronstal, elementary education major from Council Bluffs, placed third in poetry interpretation and Amy Larson, junior political science major from Ankeny, placed sixth in program oral interpretation.
