Your bone marrow could save a life

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UNI Marrow Project will sponsor the University of Northern Iowa's first-ever marrow donor registration drive 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 25, in Maucker Union. UNI students, faculty, staff and the public are encouraged to register.

The Marrow Project registers healthy volunteers ages 18 to 60. Once registered, a volunteer can be called upon to donate marrow or stem cells to a person who needs a transplant to fight a life-threatening disease. Registration involves giving a small blood sample and filling out a simple health questionnaire.

"This is a great opportunity to potentially save someone's life," said Ben Russo, UNI general studies major and president of the UNI Marrow Project. "Every day 25 people die because there is no marrow match available to them. Our goal is to get people on the national registry and change the statistics. To even get the number down to 23 would be great."

For more information about bone marrow donation, contact the Iowa Marrow Donor Program at 1-800-944-8220. For more information about the UNI Marrow Project, call Ben Russo at (319) 277-2170, or email: bjaminrus@aol.com.
