CEDAR FALLS, Iowa The Gathering the Tribe conference for creative writers, writing instructors and graduate students will be held Oct. 26 - 27, at the University of Northern Iowa. All events will take place at the Center for Energy and Environmental Education (CEEE).
This will be a first-of-its-kind event, the very first time that poets, writers and writing teachers across Iowa will meet to share their work and discuss ways we can aid each other, said Vince Gotera, conference director, coordinator of creative writing at UNI and the editor of the "North American Review."
The keynote speaker will be Gary Gildner. An author of 17 published books, Gildner has received the National Magazine Award for Fiction, the Robert Frost Fellowship and the William Carlos Williams and Theodore Roethke poetry prizes. His books include Blue Like the Heavens, The Second Bridge, A Week in South Dakota and The Warsaw Sparks. He received the 1996 Iowa Poetry Prize for his collected works, The Bunker in the Parsley Fields.
All session readings and Gildner's keynote address are free and open to the public. The session readings will take place on Thursday at 2 and 3:30 p.m., and on Friday at 9, 10 and 11 a.m., and 2 p.m.
Registration is $49 for non-students and $20 for students. Participants who wish to be a presenter must register before the conference. Those who wish only to attend the conference have the option to register the day of the conference.
The conference is sponsored by the UNI Creative Writing Program, with support from the Graduate College, the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, the Department of English Language and Literature and the North American Review. CEDAR FALLSAward-winning book designer Richard Eckersley will present a slide lecture at 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 26, in Room 111 of the Kamerick Art Building on the University of Northern Iowa campus.
A native of Great Britain, Eckersley is senior designer at the University of
Nebraska Press. He has taught at a number of schools in England, Ireland and the United States, including Yale University and the Tyler School of Art. Among his many awards are the Carl Herzog Prize for book design, and his designation as Royal Designer for Industry by the Royal Society of Arts. His best-known book designs are Avital Ronell, The Telephone Book (a postmodern work on electronic communications) and Warren F. Motte, Jr.'s Questioning Edmond Jabes.
Concurrent with the lecture will be an exhibition of Eckersley's book covers and interior page spreads. The exhibition will remain on display outside the Gallery of Art from October 23 through November 12. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
