CEDAR FALLS, Iowa The University of Northern Iowa Panther Marching Band will be the exhibition band at the Mid-Iowa Championships, Saturday, Oct. 14, at the end of the event, which begins at 5 p.m. Twenty-five high school bands from a three-state area are scheduled to compete.

High schools competing at the event include: Carlisle; Cascade; Williamsburg; North Polk (Alleman); Eddyville-Blakesburg; Creston; Dallas Center-Grimes; Waterloo Columbus; Waukee; Norwalk; Knoxville; Saydel (Des Moines); Spirit Lake; Maurice (Orange City); Charles City; Pella; Blue Springs, Blue Springs, Mo.; Des Moines East; Millard West, Omaha, Neb.; Urbandale; Cedar Rapids Kennedy; Cedar Rapids Washington; Newton; Sioux City North; Oskaloosa; Bellevue East, Bellevue, Neb.; and West Des Moines Valley. The Ankeny High School Marching Band will not compete, but perform as an exhibition band.
This year, the UNI Panther Marching Band is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The band is one of the largest student organizations on campus, with 182 members representing more than 40 majors.
It's pretty impressive for a school of this size to have a 100-year legacy of marching band, said John Baker, director of UNI's Symphonic and Marching Bands and an assistant professor of music.
The band performs at all home football games in the UNI-Dome and usually travels to one away game annually. It has performed at Minnesota Vikings football games, the Quad Cities Festival of Trees parade and in numerous college stadiums.
The UNI Panther Marching Band is one of several successful musical performance groups in the UNI School of Music. Others include Jazz Band I, which recently received Downbeat magazine's highest five-star rating for several CDs it recorded; Men's Glee Club; Wind Symphony; Percussion Ensemble; and UNITUBA Ensemble.
Students who are interested in majoring or minoring in music at UNI should contact the UNI School of Music for admission, audition and scholarship information.
The UNI Music Education program has a 100 percent placement record. Additionally, UNI graduates are the largest single group of music educators in Iowa.
