The Current Research on Women Forum Series at the University of Northern Iowa begins Oct. 2

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa —The 2000-2001 Current Research on Women (CROW) Forum Series will begin this fall with Barbara Fast, UNI associate professor of piano, at noon, Monday, Oct. 2, in the Maucker Union Embassy Room. Fast, who also is associate director of graduate studies in the School of Music, will discuss “Contributions of Women in Piano Pedagogy.”

Fast's primary focus will be on Marguerite Miller who was the subject of her dissertation and on the cutting edge of piano pedagogy in the latter half of the 20th century. She says what is unique about Miller is that she did various things within her career. “She would see a need in her profession that influenced what she chose to do— she was on the cutting edge of developments in the field.”

Fast also will discuss three other women who contributed to the field during this same time: Celia Mae Bryant, Frances Clark and Louise Bianchi. “One of the reasons to do historical biographical work is what we can learn from studying the lives of people,” says Fast. “Miller has directly influenced me— decisions I have made— by looking at how she made some of the decisions she made in her life.”

Fast is in her sixth year at UNI. She teaches applied piano, piano pedagogy and group piano. She holds her doctorate in piano pedagogy from the University of Oklahoma.

The next CROW Forum lecture will be on Monday, Nov. 6. Harry Brod, UNI associate professor of philosophy and religion, will present “Teaching Masculinities as Superior Status,” noon-1 p.m., in the Maucker Union Embassy Room.

The CROW Forum Series is sponsored by the UNI Graduate Program in Women's Studies. It is open to the public, free of charge.

UNI Panther Marching Band celebrating its 100th anniversary

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The University of Northern Iowa Panther Marching Band will celebrate its 100th anniversary during the 2000 Homecoming weekend, Saturday, Sept. 30. All band alumni have been invited to take part in the celebration.

The 2000 Panther Marching Band will perform at the Homecoming parade at 10 a.m. Then, band alumni are invited to view displays of bands past and present at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. An anniversary luncheon in the building's McElroy Lobby will follow.

The current band will perform at 3:30 p.m. prior to the Panthers' 4:05 p.m. football game against the Illinois State Redbirds. The alumni pep band, directed by former marching band director Bill Shepherd, UNI associate professor of music, will play in the stands during the game.

An extended half-time program will feature a recognition ceremony, where UNI President Robert D. Koob will present a plaque to John Vallentine, director of the UNI School of Music, commemorating the anniversary.

“It's pretty impressive for a school of this size to have a 100-year legacy of a marching band,” said John Baker, director of UNI's Symphonic & Marching Bands and an assistant professor of music.

Today, Baker said, the band is one of the largest student organizations on campus, with 182 members representing more than 40 majors. It performs at all home football games in the Dome and usually travels to one away game annually. In previous years, the band has traveled to Minneapolis to perform at Minnesota Vikings football games, performed in the Quad Cities "Festival of Trees" Parade and made numerous trips to other college stadiums. The band will perform as the exhibition band at the conclusion of the Mid-Iowa (Marching Band) Championships in Ankeny, Oct. 14.

The band produced its own CD in 1999, and hopes to complete an anniversary edition, which will include the UNI Fight Song, the Alma Mater Song, traditional pre-game music and the season's show songs.
