CEDAR FALLS, Iowa The University of Northern Iowa's ever-popular scholarship benefit concert will be Friday, Sept. 29, at 7:30 p.m. This year's event, From Brazil to Broadway, will be presented in the Great Hall of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center, and will feature a post-concert gala reception in the building's McElroy Lobby.
We're particularly excited about this year's concert, said John Vallentine, director of the UNI School of Music. We have top-notch performers on the program and, now that the Gallagher-Bluedorn Center is open, these performers can showcase their talents in a state-of-the-art facility. Further, because of the phenomenal acoustical qualities of the hall, the audience will hear the performers' music the way it was meant to be heard.
In previous years, the event has been presented on two consecutive nights in UNI's Russell Hall. But, explains Vallentine, the Gallagher-Bluedorn offers more seating, so the concert will take place on one night only.
Performers for the evening include world-renowned jazz trombonist Nick Lane, a Marshalltown native who has toured extensively with Maynard Ferguson, and such diverse artists as Rod Stewart and Tom Petty, and The Who. Also on the program are faculty tenor Darryl Taylor; faculty marimbist Randy Hogancamp; faculty pianist Jeongwon Ham; the Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Rebecca Burkhardt; the UNI Wind Symphony, conducted by Ronald Johnson; John Vallentine, director of the School of Music; the George Walker Society of Music, a student group organized by Taylor; the UNI Flute Choir; and the UNI Lyric Theatre.
Tickets, available at the door, are $25. Proceeds will benefit scholarships in the UNI School of Music.
