UNI fall enrollment tops 14,000; sets record for fourth straight year

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- For the fourth straight year, the University of Northern Iowa has set a fall enrollment record. According to UNI Registrar Phil Patton, 14,070 students are enrolled for the fall semester, topping the 14,000 mark for the first time. The new record eclipses last fall's record of 13,774.

"The total increase for fall 2001 is 296 students, or 2.1 percent," said Patton. "Among individual categories seeing an increase was our minority student enrollment which increased 8.4 percent to 722, also setting a new record for minority student enrollment."

The UNI minority student population has set a record each of the last three years, with minority enrollment of 666 in the fall of 2000 and 587 in 1999. Highlighting this year's increase is a 3.9 percent jump in African-American students to 370 and a 33.3 percent increase in Hispanic-American students to 180. Minority students now make up 5.1 percent of the UNI student body, compared to 4.8 percent in fall 2000.

Records also were set in the number of new transfer students, 1,221; new minority students, 244; and new graduate students, 425.

21st Annual UNI Career Fair offers opportunities for students and alumni

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The 21st Annual University of Northern Iowa Career Fair will take place from 2 to 6 p.m., Monday, Sept. 24, in the UNI-Dome.

"Students should know that their careers begin the day they come to UNI," said Susan Schwieger UNI Career Center associate director. "The fair is intended to provided students and alumni opportunities for networking, career exploration, internships and employment. While contacts often result in employment, this isn't primarily a job fair. It's part of the education process. The goal is to help people expand their career horizons and knowledge so they can make sound choices."

The Career Fair is open to all UNI students and alumni. More than 150 representatives from business, industry, non-profit and government organizations, and professional and graduate schools will participate in the event. Students and alumni are encouraged to bring copies of their resume to give to company and organization representatives.

An Interview Day has been added to complement the Career Fair. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25 in Maucker Union. More than 25 employers who attend the Career Fair will participate in the Interview Day and will build their interview schedules from the contacts made at the fair. Students wishing to participate in the Interview Day must attend the Career Fair to sign up.

The Career Fair is organized and sponsored by the UNI Career Center. A list of participating organizations is available via the Web at http://www.uni.edu/careercenter. For more information, contact Susan Schwieger, UNI Career Center associate director, at (319) 273-6857.
