20th Annual UNI Career Fair offers opportunities for students and alumni

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The 20th Annual University of Northern Iowa Career Fair will take place Monday, Sept. 25, at the UNI-Dome, from 2 to 6 p.m. Representatives from more than 190 companies and organizations will attend the event.

“Students should know that their careers begin the day they come to UNI,” said Muriel Stone, UNI Career Center director. “The fair is intended to provide students and alumni opportunities for networking, career exploration, internships and employment. While contacts often result in employment, this isn't primarily a job fair. It's part of the education process. The goal is to help people expand their career horizons and knowledge so they can make sound choices.”

The Career Fair is open to all UNI students and alumni. Representatives from business, industry, non-profit and government organizations, and professional and graduate schools will participate in the event. Students and alumni are encouraged to bring copies of their resume to give to company and organization representatives.

The Career Fair is organized and sponsored by the UNI Career Center and is co-sponsored by the Northern Iowa Student Government, and the UNI College of Business Administration.

A list of participating organizations is available via the Web at http://www.uni.edu/careercenter/events/fairs/careerfr.html. For more information, contact Susan Schwieger, UNI Career Center associate director, at (319) 273-6857.

Emmy Award-winning journalist to visit the University of Northern Iowa campus Wednesday, Sept. 27

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa —Ruchira Gupta, an international journalist, will present her Emmy Award-winning documentary at the University of Northern Iowa, from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 27, in the Schindler Education Center, Room 244-245. Her presentation, sponsored by the UNI Women's Studies Program, is free and open to the public.

Gupta's film, “The Selling of Innocents,” exposes the trafficking of young women and children from villages in Nepal to the brothels of Mumbai (Bombay), India. Gupta discovered the situation while she was working on a project on villages in Nepal.

“Many villages in the hills had no women between the ages of 15 and 45,” said Gupta. “I found that there was a system to procure girls and carry them in trucks to the brothels in Kamathipura. I saw procurers on the prowl, parents selling their daughters, money changing hands and the prosperity in homes where money was coming from Mumbai.”

Gupta's film has been shown in excerpts on The Oprah Winfrey Show, at the Stockholm World Congress on Sexual Exploitation of Children and at UNICEF regional workshops. The documentary was made for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
