CEDAR FALLS, Iowa The University of Northern Iowa Office of the Provost and Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society, will host a presentation, The Global Warming Debate: Separating the Scientific Signal From the Political Noise, Wednesday, Sept. 20. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center, with guest speaker Stephen H. Schneider, professor in Stanford University's Department of Biological Sciences.
According to Schneider, socio-technical problems like global warming often produce extreme theories ranging from end of the world to good for us, neither of which is very likely. Yet, he says, these theories continue to show up in the media and political debates. While no one can claim to have precise expectations about the climatic future, a great deal of consensus exists about many aspects of the topic. Schneider will try to distinguish the well-known components of the debate and contrast them to the media/political debate.
Schneider has conducted pioneering work in the areas of atmospheric science and global climatology, and is editor of Climate Change a journal he founded in 1975. In 1984, Science Digest selected him as one of the One Hundred Outstanding Young Scientists in America. Among his awards are a MacArthur Foundation Prize Fellowship, and appointments to presidential science advisory committees.
His presentation is free and open to the public.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa The National Program for Playground Safety (NPPS), headquarted at the University of Northern Iowa, is hosting a groundbreaking conference Sept. 14-16 in the UNI Wellness/Recreation Center, room 204.
According to Donna Thompson, NPPS director, on average, more than 575 children are treated in emergency rooms each day for playground related injuries. The purpose of the conference is to develop recommendations for age-appropriate playground equipment based on a review of playground injury data for children ages 0 to12. The long-term goal is to provide decision-makers who select playground equipment with guidelines, which will allow them to provide safer play environments.
The key is that even the safest playgrounds too often have a mix of unmarked equipment, said Thompson. What's appropriate and safe for an 8-year-old isn't necessarily appropriate and safe for a 4-year-old.
The conference will be made up of a select group of more than 25 nationally known experts in children's play; playgrounds and play environments; early childhood development; school-aged child development; children with disabilities; neutral design, physical education; recreation and medicine.
