CEDAR FALLS, Iowa The University of Northern Iowa Forensic Program will host the 2000 Ulrich Season Opener Debate Tournament, Saturday, Sept. 16 - Monday, Sept. 18. More than 100 debate teams will represent approximately 50 different colleges and universities. Elimination rounds will be held on Monday, Sept. 18, at the Waterloo Holiday Inn and Convention Center.
Last year's tournament was one of the largest we have ever hosted, and so far this year's event looks to be as large, said Leah White, UNI director of forensics and assistant professor of communication studies. We already have entries from Dartmouth, the University of Southern California and Arizona State University.
The tournament is named for Walter Ulrich, a former UNI debate coach. He also was an author of articles on debate theory and argumentation and a debate judge.
The UNI Forensic Program is open to all students interested in competitive speech and debate. Last year, the UNI debate team was ranked as one of the top 40 teams in the nation, and the UNI Speech Team was 11th place in its division at the national speech tournament.
