CEDAR FALLS, Iowa For the third straight year, the University of Northern Iowa has set a fall enrollment record. According to UNI Registrar Phil Patton, 13,774 students are enrolled for the fall semester. The new record eclipses last fall's record of 13,553. The 1998 fall count was 13,329.
The total increase for fall 2000 is 221 students, or 1.6 percent, said Patton. We had increases in every new-student category, including a 21.5 percent increase in minority students.
The UNI minority population increased by 79 students, establishing a new record for minority enrollment of 666. Minority students now make up 4.8 percent of the UNI student body.
Achieving a diverse university community continues to be a priority for UNI, said UNI President Robert D. Koob. Once again, we're pleased to see an increase in minority enrollment.
Records also were set in the number of new freshmen, 2,263; and new transfer students, 1,167.
A record number of new graduate students also was established at 365.
Continued growth confirms that UNI remains attractive to Iowa's college-bound students, and that there is an increasing percentage of Iowa's high school graduates interested in college, said Koob.
